Feed Me: National Dessert Day

The most American dessert may be chocolate chip cookies, invented in Massachusetts in 1938.

But every state has their own "signature dessert."

List

What's funny is I opened three different pages, and each had something different for Alabama.

There's Lane Cake, Cream Cheese Poundcake, and a Peanut Butter Pie.

Allrecipes agreed on Lane Cake though.

Feed Me: Stroopwafel

 A Dutch syrup-filled waffle cookie.

Dutch syrup is a caramel-like syrup traditionally made from sugar beets.

It was created in the late 18th or early 19th century, as a cheap treat made from bakery leftovers.

Recipe

My sister went to the Netherlands and brought some Daelmans back - they're best when you warm them over your coffee cup.

Since 1904

Trader Joe's has a decent offering.

Feed Me: Guacamole

 Continuing Guacamole Day!

It is a traditional Mexican dish, created by the Aztecs 500 years ago.

They would mash avocados with tomatoes, wild chiles and salt, using a mortar and pestle called molcajete.

Recipe

It's also Mexico's Independence Day today, and I found "the most patriotic dish of the celebration" is Chiles en Nogada.

Feed Me: Coconut

I'm not often a fan of shredded coconut, but I don't always hate a macaroon.

Recipe

I might prefer these Chewy Coconut Bars.

Or maybe a Dulce de Coco?

Feed Me: Potatoes

Off the top of your head, you can probably list a few different ways to enjoy the potato, but I imagine you'd also be surprised to see just how many dishes there are.

"Without the potato, the balance of European power might never have tilted north."

-Michael Pollan

We had french fries last night, with Hubby's homemade Sloppy Joe's.

Yum.

Feed Me: Couscous

Rich in protein and fiber, couscous is a nutritious alternative to pasta and rice.

It comes to us from North Africa, created by the Berber people hundreds of years ago.

keskes is named for the steamer pot used to cook the crushed durum wheat.

Feed Me: Benedict

But with chipotle hollandaise.

It was delicious.

Chorizo in place of ham, and this recipe shows avocado in the picture as well.

Feed Me: Lavender and Honey

We bought some lavender salt from a local vendor, and the Mason Valley Beekeepers let me try some raw honeycomb.  That was delicious.

You can find a few different bundles to buy, but it's always best to have a local honey.

Especially if you have allergies, it exposes your immune system to trace amounts of regional pollen.

Plus, commercial honey has generally lost natural antioxidants and beneficial enzymes through processing.

And here are some summer sweet and savory lavender recipes.

Feed Me: For the Fourth

This has become an annual share.

So here are some cake recipes, or maybe you'd prefer just to make a side dish.

Apparently the Today Show shared a recipe for a Dirty Martini Burger meant for the holiday.

And a few other ideas.

Feed Me: Pralines

Back in the early 1600's, a French chef toasted almonds in caramelized sugar.

When the treat was being recreated here, in New Orleans, the scarce almond was eventually replaced with pecans, giving rise to the distinctly American-style praline.

Feed Me: Egg Rolls

The first records date back to the Jin Dynasty, associated with the Spring Festival.

Cantonese immigrants brought their recipes with them during the Gold Rush, which then evolved in American Chinatowns.

By the 1950's there were frozen options to be found in grocery stores, sold by Chun King.

This is an air fryer recipe but also a wrap guide.

Feed Me: Fry Bread

We just happened to go through the reservation on our way out of town Saturday, and YES!!!!!

I am now following the tribe page for these updates, but usually you just have to be lucky and be there when they set up.  A holiday weekend is a good bet though, as people head out to the lake.

There's a place in Spokane called Indigenous Eats, and I loved the idea of being able to get an Indian taco whenever I want, but....this was better.

Feed Me: Croutons

Did I actually want a salad, or just the croutons?

LOL

They were first introduced in Medieval kitchens as a means to use up stale bread, going into soups and stews.  But the word comes from the French word for "crust," as chefs started serving dishes with fried or toasted pieces of bread.

They were then served with the first Caesar salad, created in 1924 by an Italian immigrant living in Tijuana.

Here's a recipe to make your own!

Feed Me: But Don't Waste It

Compass Group is the largest foodservice company in the world, multinational.

Their mission is to create a positive impact on people, the planet, and the food system.

Roughly one-third of the food produced globally is either lost or wasted every year.

And the biggest culprit is the household, along with overproduction and supply chain issues.

It's not just about leftovers, it's about spoilage and improper storage.

Feed Me: Noyo Fish Co.

The wharf in Fort Bragg is small scale compared to San Francisco.  It was a nice, quiet, misty morning.

I had clam chowder in a bread bowl, naturally.  It was delicious.

They had local rock cod (Pacific rockfish) for the fish and chips, with a beer batter from North Coast's Scrimshaw Pilsner.

Yeah, we stopped there too.

Feed Me: Waffles

Linked to the Feast of Annunciation, and originating in Sweden, it's the day of the vĂ„ffeldagen.

Traditionally they used an iron that makes four heart shapes.

Recipe

The difference with a Belgian waffle is using whipped egg whites for a lighter, thicker waffle.

And then, of course, there's chicken.  With spicy honey sauce.

Feed Me: Sofrito

National Sofrito Day!

A flavorful blend of herbs, spices and vegetables, popular throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Each country has its own twist, but I was primarily seeing this green.

This particular recipe is from Dominican Republic.

Here

Chef says it's a versatile seasoning that can be used with most meals.

It is very much about cilantro, and culantro, so if you're not a fan....

So you're supposed to be fasting now. No snacks!

No meat from mammal or fowl.

Enjoy!

Feed Me: Stuffed Mushroom

 To go with your Headlines...

Recipe

This isn't something I'm a big fan of, mushrooms aren't my jam.

I'd probably like the filling though.

This site has some variations.

Feed Me: Granola Bars

Recipe

I used to love those chewy Quaker bars, but as the author alludes to, those aren't the healthiest choice.

"Granula" was originally invented in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson, made from baked and crumbled graham flour.  John Harvey Kellogg then altered the recipe with oats in 1881.  After some legal dispute, he renamed it "granola."
