What's On Tonight (Wednesday): Novel TV shows can Boomerang

Boomerang (via Giphy)
Hello and welcome to the first Wednesday where Modern Family is no longer in production. The last time this happened, I was a college (super) senior. The top honors tonight goes to BET's other Lena Waithe dramedy: Boomerang, a quasi-spinoff of the 1992 Eddie Murphy movie. Two core leads are the children of the characters of the film who, along with their close friends, are trying to find their way and purpose in the world. It's a Black cast that explores the world of marketing and advertising along with some strong representation. Elsewhere, it's the end of an abbreviated season for the Windy City trio, the Drew Crew, and Archie & Friends — at least the latter get to go out with a musical (most remaining broadcast shows end next week). Back for new seasons are the hilarious vampires of New York City, Dan Rather interviews, and Beverly Hills housewives. The newbie premieres (all streaming) include the story of women against the ERA, a teen crime-adventure series, and a crime docuseries of justice-gone-wrong. Oh, and PBS investigates diabetes and 20-something Hattie is fired from Cocoa's Butter. Please turn in your minifigs and say goodbye, here's what's on television for tonight, Wednesday, April 15!

STREAMING / EARLY PRIMETIME

The Innocence Files (Netflix, 3 a.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. In yet another crime docuseries... unravel the missteps and deceit in various wrongful convictions.

Jeopardy! ðŸ’² (Syndicated, check your local listings): Last chance to make the College Championship finals!

Little Fires Everywhere (Hulu, 3 a.m.): Izzy's relationship with mother, Elena, reaches a boiling point. That seems pretty obvious since Izzy admitted that she has been visiting Mia.

Mrs. America (Hulu, 3 a.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. This week's attempt at prestige drama is this miniseries about conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly, who leads an unexpected fight against the Equal Rights Amendment movement during the 1970s. The show focuses on several other people in the fight (on both sides), too. It boasts an impressive cast, led by Cate Blanchett and including Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Paulson, John Slattery, James Marsden, Rose Byrne, and beloved Emmy-winning character actress Margo Martindale. While praised in early reviews, Schlafly as an anti-hero created some mixed feelings.✔️

Outer Banks (Netflix, 3 a.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. A group of teenagers from the wrong side of the tracks stumble upon a treasure map that unearths a long buried secret.

Quantum Leap ðŸ“º (Comet, 7 p.m.): In 1959, Sam becomes a disc jockey helping FM station manager Patricia Richardson battle a puritanical reporter bent on obliterating rock 'n' roll.

FOR THE RECORDMarried at First Sight: Unfiltered (Lifetime, 7:30 p.m.); Tooning Out the News (CBS All Access, 3 a.m.)

🕗 EASTERN / 🕖 CENTRAL

Chicago Med (NBC, 8 p.m.): FINALE. Dr. Crockett is visited by two New Orleans detectives who have questions about his past. I hope one of them is David Morse, reviving his character from Treme. Choi puts his life in danger to save a child. And "Dr. Charles gives fatherly advice to his young daughter." These shows don't write themselves, folks!

The Goldbergs (ABC, 8 p.m.): Business rival and nemesis "Formica" Mike attempts to make an offer Murray can't refuse. Adam offers Ms. Cinoman his and Erica's original show when William Penn cannot secure the rights to a well-known spring musical.

In the Cut (Bounce, 8 p.m.): Jay conspires with his doctor on an elaborate scheme to convince Smitty he needs a colonoscopy. Mabel's birthday celebration takes an interesting a turn when two of her ex-boyfriends show up.

The Masked Singer (Fox, 8 p.m.): "A viewer sing-along featuring Season 3 performances." This is a public service announcement so you, too, can avoid the Fox Television Network during this hour.

Riverdale (The CW, 8 p.m.): FINALE-ISH? I believe this is the last episode ready to air. Kevin decides to revive Riverdale High's tradition of hosting a variety show. When Mr. Honey forbids Kevin from performing a number from "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," the gang rallies against their principal, each performing a song from the show. Riverdale High's Laugh-InKeller and CompanyRiverdale Night LiveThe Kevin Keller and Veronica Rainbow HourArchie and Betty Presents the Riverdale Variety Show Starring Your Host Kevin Keller! Pink Lady and Jughead! Riverdale a Go GoTurn-On!✔️

Schooled (ABC, 8:30 p.m.): Coach Mellor deals with jealousy issues after learning Julie is friends with a handsome doctor. Meanwhile, Glascott appoints CB to be substitute principal after his surgery, but he needs Lainey to solve a problem that he can't.

Survivor (CBS, 8 p.m.): Contestants have moments with their loved ones. After a "wild" tribal council, the 12th person is sent to the Edge of Extinction, which sounds like a dark and gritty reboot of the Ice Age franchise..

FOR THE RECORDAEW: Dynamite (TNT); The Big Interview with Dan Rather (AXS TV, premiere); Black Ink Crew (VH1); Cennet (Telemundo, 8 p.m.); The Challenge (MTV); The Liquidator (FYI); Making Good (BYUtv, 8:30 p.m.); Married at First Sight (Lifetime, finale); My 600-Lb Life (TLC); The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (Bravo, premiere); Te doy la vida (Univision); WWE NXT (USA)
Riverdale, "Wicked Little Town" (via The CW)

🕘 EASTERN / 🕗 CENTRAL

American Housewife (ABC, 9 p.m.): After years and years of waiting, ABC finally has a good show on at 9! Katie encourages Anna-Kat to stand up for herself when dealing with Taylor. Oliver feels left out when Greg invites Lonnie, Trip, and Franklin to join him at a reenactment of "The Battle of Westport."

Blood Sugar Rising (PBS, 9 p.m.): SPECIAL. The history and science of diabetes, an epidemic that affects 100 million Americans and costs more than $350 billion annually.

Chicago Fire (NBC, 9 p.m.): FINALE. When one of 51's own gets injured on a call, Severide becomes obsessed with helping out. Meanwhile, Kidd is concerned for one of her high school trainees.

Lego Masters (Fox, 9 p.m.): FINALE. So, the summary says "The two remaining duos go head-to-head as they create their most epic master builds yet," even though there are three duos going into the finals. While I really enjoy the concept of the show and Will Arnett, the competitors casting really missed the mark, opting for people good Lego builders who are also really great for TV dramatics.

Motherland: Fort Salem (Freeform, 9 p.m.): Abigail brings the unit to a High Atlantic wedding, in hopes of increasing their odds for War College. Abigail struggles under family pressures, while Raelle leans on Scylla.

Nancy Drew (The CW, 9 p.m.): FINALE. Despite not being the planned finale, "The Clue in the Captain's Painting" will serve as the Drew Crew's season closer. Nancy and her friends investigate a mysterious death, which also leads to new details regarding the Aglaeca curse. The show is good in its own bonkers sort of way, certainly improving during the season but better as an ensemble than as a showcase of Nancy. However, it is nothing like the literature character Nancy Drew, whom I adore on the highest level.✔️

Single Parents (ABC, 9:30 p.m.): The parents are back! With flashbacks! When Sharon goes into labor, Poppy and the gang step up to help her get to the hospital, telling each of their own birth stories to help distract her from Ron's absence.

Sistas (BET, 9 p.m.): The ladies grow worried about Andi and her relationship... Karen tries to figure out what she wants... Sabrina tends to Calvin in his time of need... Danni tries to move on from her hurt feelings.

FOR THE RECORD: Amor Eterno (Univision); Forged in Fire (History); Ghost Hunters (A&E); Guy's Grocery Games (Food Network); La Doña (Telemundo); Mega Machines (Science, finale); Property Brothers: Forever Home (HGTV, premiere); Salvage Hunters (Motor Trend); See No Evil (Investigation Discovery); Summer House (Bravo); The Wizard of Paws (BYUtv)

🕙 EASTERN / 🕘 CENTRAL

⭐ Boomerang (BET, 10:30 p.m.): The show is about six friends, but it's not like Friends. The show explores the workplace dynamics of Generation X and Millennials and the friends as they navigate relationships. Leads Bryson and Simone had a relationship for a while, and the rest of the (attractive) cast brings diversity and sexual fluidity to the table. I've only watched season one, but it is really good. In the penultimate episode of season two (season three is a go), Crystal takes a solo trip to Paris to celebrate her new job. Initially more interested in social media, she eventually finds adventure and romance without her phone, coming into her own as a new strong, sexy, independent Crystal.✔️

Brockmire (IFC, 10 p.m.): Jules tries to win Beth's approval of the relationship she and Brockmire are trying to rekindle, but they don't get along until Jules takes Beth under her wing as a drinking buddy. Jim is irate that Jules was a bad influence on his daughter.

Chicago P.D. (NBC, 10 p.m.): FINALE. Atwater goes under cover to take down a gun trafficking ring but discovers an officer from his past is under cover in the same organization.

Crank Yankers (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.): The crankers tonight are Tracy Morgan, Kevin Nealon, and Adam Carolla.

Dave (FXX, 10 p.m.): Dave meets with labels about a record deal and ends up in the studio with Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco. After getting invited to his first Hollywood party, Dave rubs elbows with Kourtney Kardashian, while Ally and Elz get browned out. This show has been winning me over.

It's Personal with Amy Hoggart (truTV, 10 p.m.): Kevin struggles with shame over not voting in the 2016 election and he's lied to everybody... but living with the lie is now a nightmare.

Twenties (BET, 10 p.m.): FINALE. In a brave move to get Nia a role on Cocoa's Butter, Hattie is fired from the show. Marie holds a special birthday dinner that takes a turn when an unexpected guest arrives.

What We Do in the Shadows (FX, 10 p.m.): PREMIERE. The vampires and the documentary crew are back! The freshman season started out strong and only got better and more hilarious. [*goes watch clips season one clips*] [*comes back an hour later*] In the double-episode premiere, Nadja and Laszlo's new familiar poses problems for an increasingly anxious Guillermo, and the vampires enlist the services of a local necromancer. Later, the vampires hold a séance to deal with a ghost infestation, which leads to a larger ghost infestation. I'm already loling.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (ABC, 10 p.m.): Will Forte and comic Nikki Glaser play the game. I kinda miss Stumptown. It was nice having the husband-and-wife duo of Taran Killam and Cobie Smulders closing ABC Wednesdays.
