Once again Governor Tony Evers of Wisconsin has stepped into the breach and vetoed Republican hate. It really pisses them off that they no longer have the power to override his vetoes. Elections matter. Today was election day in Wisconsin. And coincidentally it was inauguration day in Senegal which made Dakar a nightmare of traffic. [ABC]
I'm not sure if this story counts as politics or not but it sure does to me. Today I learned about a founder of abstract expressionism who never got her due because she was an untrained "housewife". She was an influence on Jackson Pollack who we still talk about even though her canvases (and glass and so many other media) are more interesting than his. Unlike Pollack who rejected representation altogether, Janet Sobel, who pioneered all the methods that Pollack used, she would include faces, often hidden. Those faces were representations of people in her family who had died in pograms. They are there and they are not. She was also a victim of her art. The paints (and sand and whatever) that she used were toxic. She's long gone now but she's getting a brief moment in the sun again and that's something to celebrate. I needed something inspiring today after visiting Goree Island and the Gate of No Return. This story didn't quite give me a happy ending but it taught me a lesson in striving. [CNN]
Political Discussion welcome.
