When all the Toronto suburbs were forcefully amalgamated back in the 1990s, my grandparents were really worried they were going to lose their fall leaf collection service to budget cuts or face reduced service as it was extended to other parts of the amalgamated city. They didn't have a big property but it was a corner lot with four extremely mature trees that generated a ton of leaves. After close to three decades the perk has finally been axed by city council, leaving many homeowners frustrated with what will be a hefty fall chore next year. (CBC)
10 years ago the ski resorts in Bellagio, Italy closed due to consistent lack of snow. Now the city is hoping to revitalize winter tourism through a plan to reopen the hills with artificial snow, even though climate models suggest that northern Italy will soon face droughts on par with the horn of Africa. Italy should perhaps look to the tiny African island of Mayotte, which is currently in the grips of a massive water crisis thanks to sustained drought and failures to invest in its water system. (CNN)
