Jeopardy! recap for Wed., Oct. 16

Let's meet today's contestants:

- Jackie, a teacher from Pennsylvania, engages in "Trebeking", which is responding to clues before Alex is finished reading them;
- John, an opera singer from New Jersey, is a successful baritone; and
- Ed, a retiree from New York, has his Trebek wig almost catch on fire. Ed is a one-day champ with winnings of $31,000.

Champ Ed set the pace all the way and held off a strong challenge by John to lead into FJ with $22,600 vs. $18,600 for John and $4,000 for Jackie.

DD1, $800 - WHAT PREZ PRECEDED... - Martin Van Buren, and you can take that to the bank (Ed won $3,800 on a true DD.)

DD2, $2,000 - GEOGRAPHICAL NICKNAMES - This country that's famous for its cheese & butter is nicknamed "The dairy of northern Europe" (Jackie lost $3,000 from her third-place score of $4,600 vs. $10,200 for Ed.)

DD3, $800 - TV PETS - On "Sabrina the Teenage Witch", her talking black cat had this name, also a historic New England village (John added $4,000 to his total of $5,800 vs. $15,400 for Ed.)

FJ - WORLD LEADERS - This man who ruled from 1949 to 1976 was sometimes called "The Red Sun"

Ed and Jackie were correct on FJ, with Ed adding $20,000 to win with $42,600 for a two-day total of $73,600.

Wagering strategy: In the days of co-champions, John betting it all would have been an interesting move, as the way the scores shaped up raised the possibility of ties. But nowadays, the best move for John would have been to bet no more than $10,599 to lock out Jackie and win if Ed missed.

Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the 2012 school movie that "we sing the praises" of is "Pitch Perfect".

Correct Qs:
DD1 - Who was Andrew Jackson?
DD2 - What is Denmark?
DD3 - Who is Salem?
FJ - Who was Mao Zedong?
