What's On Tonight (Sunday): Sunday night and the eating is Good

Good Eats, "American Classics X: Chicken Parm" (via Giphy)
My Spidey sense was right! You've arrived! Last night's WOT was about food (sorta), so I'm sticking with that theme again. Tonight, the highlight is Good Eats: The Return, a good food program indeed. My kitchen pantry is currently in the midst of a renaissance thanks to Alton Brown. Also on the lazy susan of TV programming tonight, the Darrows, Ghost Spider, Bob Newhart shows, Valerie Harper shows, and doggos behaving badly. So set down that Chinese food down and put on a sweater, here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, September 8!

EARLY PRIMETIME

60 Minutes: Steve Kroft Retrospective (CBS, 7 p.m.): This tribute show looks at Steve Kroft's 50-year journalism career, focusing mostly on his 30 years at 60 Minutes — or 15,768,000 Minutes.

Doctor Who πŸ“Ί (Retro TV, 7 p.m.): On Manussa, 500 years after the events of "Kinda," the Mara takes over the body of Lon (Martin Clunes), the ruler's son, while seeking to manifest itself by using a crystal. Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa... help!

Newhart πŸ“Ί (Decades, 6:30 p.m.): After a day of (final season-only) Newhart episodes, the only way to end it is with the quintessential series finale, "The Last Newhart." Do you remember Bob's Bob, Bob Newhart, Newhart Marathon on Nick-at-Nite in the late '90s? I do. This Decades marathon, honoring his 90th birthday, is kinda like that... because no variety show or George and Leo.

Rhoda πŸ“Ί (MeTV, 6 p.m.): MeTV pays tribute to the late Valerie Harper with an afternoon marathon of mostly Mary Tyler Moore episodes. However, closing the tribute is the classic two-part Rhoda episode "Rhoda's Wedding," a fantastic episode that also happened after only eight weeks on the air. Short-term: it was a brilliant hour bringing the MTM family together; long-term: the show shot itself in the foot, making the show a romantic comedy for a duo that didn't have enough chemistry. Emily VDW beautifully wrote about the series here.
FOR THE RECORDKiller Motive (Oxygen, 7 p.m.); Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'n Out (VH1, 7 p.m.); Snapped (Oxygen, 6 p.m.)
Doctor Who (via Giphy)

πŸ•— EASTERN / πŸ•– CENTRAL

Black Girls Rock! (BET, 8 p.m.): "Celebrating the brilliance of black women."

Bob πŸ“Ί (Decades, 8:30 p.m.): This short-lived sitcom is back and now gets the evening lineup. In this episode, Bob is nominated for an award, but worries about his acceptance speech. It features cameos by comic book artists Bob Kane, Jack Kirby, Mell Lazarus, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Mel Keefer, Paul Power, Art Thibert, and Sergio Aragones.

Chesapeake Shores (Hallmark Channel, 8 p.m.): Jess and David try to buy an inn... The Stratford? Mick and Megan explore their feelings. Kevin and Sarah make a difficult decision.

Country Music: Live at the Ryman, A Concert Celebrating the Film by Ken Burns (PBS, 8 p.m.): Country music artists perform at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in celebration of the upcoming documentary series Country Music.

Power (Starz, 8 p.m.): In this busy episode... Dre remains in federal custody. Jason instructs Tommy and Ghost to kidnap Alicia Jiminez. Tommy teaches LaKeisha the drug game. Tariq's business begins to flourish. Tasha has a business plan of her own.

Serengeti (Discovery Channel, 8 p.m.): FINALE. Tonight on the finale of Serengeti Plains, 90210, it's time to close another chapter in the lives of the animals. First, all around is a blackened wasteland, the aftermath of the huge fire.

Sunday Night Football (NBC, 8:15-ish p.m.): Metal factory workers versus men who bleed red, white, and blue. I mean, I get why the sport is fun. It just kind of propagates the ideology of physical dominance, and the economic subjugation of the working poor, plus the concussions. It should be illegal. Lol.

The Wrong Cheerleader πŸŽ₯ (Lifetime, 8 p.m.): A high school cheerleader catches the eye of a handsome new student. He seems like the ideal boy until [*dramatic music*] his affection turns into obsession and he stops at nothing to keep her all to himself. Yeah, that won't end well.

Witness to Murder: A Darrow Mystery (Hallmark Channel, 9 p.m.): Attorney Claire Darrow defends her mother's former colleague in a murder case, but things get complicated when Claire's romantic interest (guess who that is Lyona5!!) is named as the prosecuting attorney on the case.

Fear the Walking Dead (AMC, 9 p.m.): Logan's motives are revealed, Sarah, Dwight, and Luciana negotiate for the sake of the mission. Strand and Alicia race to the aid of a new survivor.

Pennyworth (Epix, 9 p.m.): While Martha and Thomas confront Crowley over his strange party and the return of Patricia, Alfred and the lads track down the identity of a wanted killer.

Spider-Man (Disney XD, 9:30 p.m.): The Bloodgem accidentally reawakens Gwen Stacy's dormant spider-powers, turning her into Ghost Spider.

Succession (HBO, 9 p.m.): Logan attempts to solidify his buyout of PGM at a weekend retreat at the Pierces, a family that questions whether an alliance with Waystar Royco will tarnish their legacy. Shiv (SHIV!!!), Roman, and Connor veer from their carefully orchestrated roles.

Volcanoes: Dual Destruction (Smithsonian Channel, 9 p.m.): After volcanoes unleashed terror on Guatemala and Hawaii in 2018, scientists explore what made the eruptions unique, why they were so hard to predict, and whether or not these two catastrophes were somehow connected.

Ghost Spider but... I think this is from Marvel Rising, not Spider-Man. Whatever. (via Tumblr)

πŸ•™ EASTERN / πŸ•˜ CENTRAL

Ballers (HBO, 10:40 p.m.): Spencer offers Jason the job of a lifetime, just as Joe makes him an interesting counteroffer. Vernon gets a tryout at an esports firm.

Dog: Impossible (Nat Geo Wild, 10 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. Dog behavior specialist Matt Beisner attempts to rehabilitate troubled doggos. So... like My Cat from Hell, but titled like that Restaurant show?

⭐ Good Eats: The Return (Food Network, 10 p.m.): So far in this much-needed revival season, chef Alton Brown has examined/breathed new life into chicken Parmesan, South American grains, seafood sauces, and immersion circulators. In tonight's double dose, shakshuka gets the spotlight alongside preserved lemons and homemade harissa. Later, Brown resuscitates the languishing tradition of the icebox or refrigerator cake. They are ready for a pastry redux!

The Johnny Cash Show πŸ“Ί (getTV, 10 p.m.): In this 1971 episode, Johnny welcomes Derek & The Dominoes, which included Eric Clapton and in their only television appearance.

To Tell the Truth πŸ’² (ABC, 10 p.m.): Justin Long, Missi Pyle, Tim Meadows, and Liza Koshy become truthers.

FOR THE RECORDBar Rescue (Paramount Network); Deadline: Crime with Tamron Hall (ID, premiere); Flip It Like Disick (E!); Island Hunters (HGTV); Raising Wild (Discovery Channel); Unexpected (TLC); Weather Gone Viral (Weather Channel); The Weekly (FX)

πŸ•š EASTERN / πŸ•™ CENTRAL

Charmed πŸ“Ί (Pop, 11 p.m.): It's the series finale! The show wraps its story up in a nice little bow at the end with deaths being reversed and attempting the redemption of Kaley Cuoco. But the main reason to watch this is the final scene, as the camera pans to the pictures on the wall of family members past and present. Everyone is to be found... except Prue.

The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour πŸ“Ί (getTV, 11 p.m.): From 1973, Sonny and Cher welcomes Wolfman Jack, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Peter Noone, and The Coasters.
To Tell the Truth remained a Monday night staple until the mid-'60s, when CBS wanted to step up its sitcom game following a couple years on the slide. While CBS still won the night, the rest of the lineups across the Big Three weren't burning up the ratings, including Ben Casey. To Tell the Truth was absent in the fall 1966, but returned that winter after the cancellation of The Jean Arthur Show (points!). However, the ratings magic was gone. I've Got a Secret was axed in April. In May, primetime editions of To Tell the Truth and Password met the same fate. And with CBS's Monday powerhouse in fall 1967, the network never looked back. It wasn't until ABC's 21st century revival that TTTT returned to network primetime. (via me)

πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ˜΄πŸ’€πŸ’€

Squidbillies (Adult Swim, midnight): Early enjoys the highfalutin lifestyle of owning a premium cooler. Later, a social media stunt nearly costs Sheriff his life.

FOR THE RECORDBig Brother After Dark (Pop, midnight)
A year after To Tell the Truth's primetime cancellation, the daytime version was canceled. It wouldn't return to broadcast TV for more than 20 years. In the waning days of NBC's daytime game show slate, To Tell the Truth was revived not long after Let's Make a Deal. However, the 1990 revival didn't survive a full season. (via me)
