What's On Tonight (Saturday): Food Wars wants to give you foodgasms

Food Wars! (via Giphy)
Hey, you're back. Still, after all this time?

Always.

Tonight, we got a typical Saturday shortage of programming, so I indulged in listing a little bit of everything. The spotlight tonight falls on the odd-looking anime series about food school and lots of TV-MA material. There's a Bob Newhart showcase, Saoirse & Margot, Melissa & puppets, and the Tates & the Campbells. So reverse the polarity, here's what's on television for tonight, Saturday, September 7!

EARLY PRIMETIME

Bob ðŸ“º (Decades, 7 p.m.): Decades' celebrates Bob Newhart's 90th birthday with a weekend of his TV shows. In the afternoon, we have the short-lived '90s sitcom Bob, featuring Newhart as a comic book artist. At this particular timeslot is the first season's Christmas episode, and Decades provides the only synopsis: "The meaning of Christmas is questioned when Bob and Trisha are both caught red-handed."

DC Super Hero Girls (Cartoon Network, 7:30 p.m.): What begins as a simple vandalism investigation becomes an all-out turf war when the team encounters a powerful trio of Kryptonians bent on world domination, and, perhaps even worse, a rival team of superhero boys. BOYS?! EWW!

Doctor Who ðŸ“º (Retro TV, 6 p.m.): The alien organism Axos spreads its Axonite particles across the Earth to allow itself to feed on all life on the planet. Save us, Doctor (Jon Pertwee)!

Maigret (Ovation, 7 p.m.): Brigade Criminelle is bought in to track down the brutal gang responsible for three vicious attacks on three wealthy farms in Picardy. However, Inspector Maigret is resolute in investigating the murder of an obscure anonymous Parisian, an investigation that ultimately solves both crimes.

🕗 EASTERN / 🕖 CENTRAL

Mary Queen of Scots ðŸŽ¥ (HBO, 8 p.m.): Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie? YES PLEASE. While this Academy Award-nominated costume drama has some good performances and great costuming, it is somewhat bland (and FWIW, isn't an accurate lesson for those seeking history).

Columbo ðŸ“º (Cozi TV, 8 p.m.): A police commissioner (Michael McGuire) provides a false alibi for a wife killer (Richard Kiley), but then expects an alibi in return. Columbo: 🔎

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 ðŸŽ¥ (NBC, 8 p.m.): The seven-book saga comes to an end with this adaptation, and questionable film changes aside, it was a pretty good time. Will the good Harry Potter defeat the evil Voldemort? That big question seems obvious.

Identity Thief of a Cheerleader ðŸŽ¥ (Lifetime, 8 p.m.): A woman in her 30s steals the identity of a high school cheerleader. I'd say it's like dramatic Younger fanfic but it's inspired by true events.

Svengoolie: The Werewolf ðŸŽ¥ (MeTV, 8 p.m.): In this mediocre-ish '50s flick, two scientists find an unconscious man at the scene of an auto accident. They take him back to their lab and inject him with a serum and either he gets better and they all live happily ever after... or the serum turns him into a murderous werewolf.

FOR THE RECORD: Ridiculousness (MTV); Say Yes to the Dress (TLC); WOW: Women of Wrestling (AXS TV, premiere)
Mary Queen of Scots (via Giphy)

🕘 EASTERN / 🕗 CENTRAL

The Happytime Murders ðŸŽ¥ (Showtime, 9 p.m.): When the puppet cast of a '90s children's TV show begin to get murdered one by one, Melissa McCarthy and a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case in this reviled movie from last year.

Patrick Swayze: Ghosts and Demons (Reelz, 9 p.m.): Patrick Swayze was a Hollywood favorite as the tender-hearted tough guy, but Swayze’s public face masked a nightmare world of pain, fear, and self-sabotage.

Soap ðŸ“º (Antenna TV, 9:30 p.m.): Pilot alert! While the episodic details were slim back in the early Thoughts On days, you can still check out Franko's general thoughts on the series if you check out WOTs starting in September 2012.

FOR THE RECORDCake Boss (Discovery Family); The Incredible Dr. Pol (Nat Geo Wild); Live PD (A&E); Love & Marriage (OWN, premiere); Restaurant: Impossible (Food Network, finale); The Vanilla Ice Project (DIY); The Zoo: San Diego (Animal Planet)

🕙 EASTERN / 🕘 CENTRAL

The Bob Newhart Show ðŸ“º (Decades, 10:30 p.m.): Decades is only airing episodes from the classic sitcom's final season. Ehhh. But this one, "A Day in the Life," is a good one. Bob's patients are thrown into turmoil when the Hartleys go on a last minute vacation to New Orleans.

Gary Owen: #DoinWhatIDo (Showtime, 10:30 p.m.): In this comedy special, Gary Owen bridges the lanes of black and white cultures both in his home and on social media.

Pick, Flip & Drive (FYI, 10 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. A Montana man who loves cars, buys them, restores them and makes the money. Via this video, I guess the show might be a Facebook import.

FOR THE RECORDBlack Women Own the Conversation (OWN); The Case That Haunts Me (ID); House Hunters Renovation (HGTV); The Vet Life (Animal Planet)

🕚 EASTERN / 🕙 CENTRAL

Dragon Ball Super (Adult Swim, 11 p.m.): Jiren is all that remains between the 7th Universe and victory. Frieza is out for the count and Vegeta is low on stamina.

gen:LOCK (Adult Swim, 11:30 p.m.): Doc reflects on past events before deciding his future. The team is tested like never before when the battle arrives at the Vanguard's front door.

Hill Street Blues ðŸ“º (Heroes & Icons, 11 p.m.): Tonight on the Hill, Renko gets upset at Hill for heading the Black Officer's Coalition, LaRue relapses, Furillo gets mad when a murder suspect goes free due to a technicality, Belker starts to feel old, Esterhaus must submit early retirement applications, and Davenport has a meltdown in court.

💤💤😴💤💤

Black Clover (Adult Swim, 1:30 a.m.): Yami reveals a story from his early days as a Magic Knight involving a top-secret mission he undertook with William Vangeance.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (Adult Swim, 2 a.m.): After attacking Katasuke's research center, the Byakuya Gang escapes by train, with Boruto and Shikadai in hot pursuit — the earlier goes after the leader while the latter fights his former friend, Ryogi, hoping he can get through to him.

Dr. Stone (Adult Swim, midnight): After Tsukasa makes his murderous intentions clear, Senku devises a clever plan to stop him in his tracks.

Fire Force (Adult Swim, 12:30 a.m.): The companies hold a cookout. Shinra and Arthur are reassigned to the 1st on a fact-finding mission.

⭐ Food Wars! (Adult Swim, 1 a.m.): I haven't watched this show, but I have watched some clips. A son who can't beat his father enrolls in a tough culinary school. Judging from the clips, the goal is to make food that... causes foodgasms? Like, people will scream and clothes will fly off, making the characters NSFW. This show is TV-MA "S" for good reason. Yet, I kinda wanna have what they're having. Tonight, Soma and Megumi are given a complex "recette" that they must follow to the letter.

The Invaders ðŸ“º (MeTV, midnight): David finds a man named John Carter (!) (also Dabney Coleman) who can predict when the next flying saucer will land.

Lupin the Third Part 5 (Adult Swim, 3:30 a.m.): At a private school, Ami befriends a princess named Dolma, who possesses a piece of jewelry Lupin and Fujiko hope to get their hands on, but an armed takeover of the school puts everyone's lives in danger.

Mobile Suit Gundam the Origin: Advent of the Red Comet (Adult Swim, 3 a.m.): Anguished by the realization that her brother Casval's survival means his look-alike Char is dead, Sayla faces a further tragedy. Lieutenant Char of the Zeon forces appears at Texas Colony in a red mobile suit.

My Hero Academia (Adult Swim, 4 a.m.): Class 1-A holds strong as the exam enters its final minutes.

The Time Tunnel ðŸ“º (MeTV, 4 a.m.): In this kinda-okay episode, Tony and Doug materialize on the first manned flight to Mars, where their added weight forces a change in flight.

FOR THE RECORDBig Brother: After Dark (Pop, midnight)

LATE-NIGHT TV

Johnny Carson ðŸ“º (Antenna TV, 10 p.m.): Joan Embery, Peter Falk, Lawrence Welk, David Brenner, and Ashley Montagu (13 Sep 1974)

Just one more thing...

Saturday Night Live (NBC, 11:29 p.m.): Halsey. It's a rerun, but it includes...
