Jeopardy! recap for Wed., Sept. 25

Let's meet today's contestants:

- Gairen, a technology consultant from New Hampshire, lost his keys despite a helpful Jeopardy! key chain;
- Ted, a sportswriter from New York, faced a team whose best pitcher was in solitary confinement; and
- Jason, a math teacher from New Mexico, was in The Infield (as opposed to The Outfield). Jason is a 18-day champ with winnings of $502,096.

Jason faced a stiff challenge from two fine opponents, but put the game away with an extremely impressive run in DJ, leading into FJ with $30,400 vs. $13,200 for Ted and $11,800 for Gairen.

DD1, $400 - "MAN" UP - It's the last word of a historic utterance made July 20, 1969 (Ted added $3,000 to his score of $4,800 and took a $200 lead over Jason. Against an 18-day champ, an all-in wager was called for here.)

DD2, $2,000 - BOOKS ABOUT CHINA - Nixon's famed trip is covered in "On China", a look at Sino-U.S. relations by this former Secretary of State (Jason won $5,000 from his leading total of $12,200.)

DD3, $1,600 - NON-GENEVA CONVENTIONS - The 1786 Annapolis convention on interstate commerce pointed up the weakness of these, leading to another convention next year (Jason added $4,000 to his score of $19,200.)

FJ - NATURAL GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES - Timely for 2018, in 1866 Mark Twain wrote of this landmark's "sputtering jets of fire" & "heat from Pele's furnaces"

Everyone was incorrect on FJ. Jason wagered $0, winning with $30,400 for a 19-day total of $532,496.

Even though this game was a runaway, it easily could have gone much differently if Ted or Gairen had found the Daily Doubles, and they certainly had their opportunities to do so. It's a prime example of how having a feel for where the DDs are likely to be hidden can be the difference between a big win or defeat.

Triple Stumper of the day: No one guessed that a sandwich that could be referred to as "brother of Joseph" in the Bible is Reuben.

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is mankind?
DD2 - Who is Kissinger?
DD3 - What are the Articles of Confederation?
FJ - What is Mt. Kilauea?
