Maigret starring Rowan Atkinson (via Giphy)
Greetings and welcome to our first official Saturday edition of What's On Tonight at our new abode! (The existence of Disqus channels is down to mere hours.) Tonight, we got that Mr. Bean guy solving murders on a channel maybe one person gets, Melissa McCarthy in a true-story movie, a quintessential private detective, and the usual rundown of Toonami. So, let's get to it! Here's what's on television for tonight, Saturday, August 31!

EARLY PRIMETIME

Doctor Who ðŸ“º (Retro TV, 6 p.m.): The Doctor (Jon Pertwee) and UNIT work to stop the time the Master (Roger Delgado) from using a radio telescope to summon an invasion force of the incorporeal intelligence the Nestenes to Earth. New companions with this serial: Jo Grant (Katy Manning) and Mike Yates (Richard Franklin).

Love Throws a Curve ðŸŽ¥ (UPtv, 7 p.m.): When an injury jeopardizes his dream of becoming a baseball player, a man (Jean-Luc Bilodeau) finds unexpected happiness with a woman who works in his favorite restaurant.

⭐ Maigret (Ovation, 7 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. It took three-and-a-half years, but this detective adaptation has finally made its way to primetime America. FOR THE RECORDInjustice with Nancy Grace (Oxygen, 6 p.m., finale)

🕗 EASTERN / 🕖 CENTRAL

Can You Ever Forgive Me? ðŸŽ¥ (HBO, 8 p.m.): Melissa McCarthy, who made her living profiling top celebrities in the '70s and '80s, has fallen out of step with current tastes. To make money, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Richard E. Grant, in a shoulda-been-Academy Award-winning role. But their scheme can't last forever.

Miss Bala ðŸŽ¥ (Starz, 8 p.m.): A remake of a 2011 Mexican film, makeup artist Jane Gloriana Villanueva Gina Rodriguez is in Tijuana when her BFF Cristina Rodlo vanishes from a nightclub. She is soon kidnapped and forced into smuggling laundered money across the border for a drug cartel because there is no wall.

Columbo ðŸ“º (Cozi TV, 8 p.m.): A gospel singer (Johnny Cash) wants to be rid of his zealous wife. But a murder made to look like an airplane accident does not fool the wily Lt. Columbo (Peter Falk).

Svengoolie: The Giant Claw ðŸŽ¥ (MeTV, 8 p.m.): In this really bad monster flick, global panic ensues when a mysterious UFO is actually a giant bird that flies at supersonic speed and has no regard for life or architecture. Not even architecture?! THE HORROR!!

This isn't a series highlight, but this season one episode features all the great recurring characters (Lola Albright, Hope Emerson, Herschel Bernardi) and was directed by Blake Edwards. If you want to know why you should check out the show, it's for the opening sequences. A lot of them are darkly hilarious.

The Time Tunnel ðŸ“º (MeTV, 4 a.m.): The pilot episode to a 1960s sci-fi show that our very own Whistler hates! The show is most unique because the two time travelers (James Darren, Robert Colbert) only share screen time with the rest of the main cast (Whit Bissell, John Zaremba, Lee Meriwether) on two(?) occasions.
