What's On Tonight (Thursday): Beasts from the East

Tonight's Top Pick is the series premiere of East of Eden, dropping at 3:01 a.m. on Netflix. I have to turn in my culture vulture credentials. I've never read the Steinbeck novel nor seen the James Dean film.


While I consider ways to better myself, let's see what else TV has to offer us for Thursday, Oct. 1. All times are Eastern.


STREAMING
Soulm8te, 12:01 a.m., Hulu. Special presentation. "A grieving engineer (David Rysdahl) is tasked with testing a ruthless tech giant's new artificially intelligent android (Lily Sullivan). But when he attempts to program her to be a truly sentient soulmate, she develops needs of her own - unleashing a relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem."

East of Eden, 3:01 a.m., Netflix. Series premiere. "This modern interpretation of Steinbeck's masterpiece will explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh)." Costarring Christopher Abbott, Ciarán Hinds, Hoon Lee, Joe Anders, Joseph Zada, Martha Plimpton, Mike Faist, and Tracy Letts. Seven episodes available.

The Real Rooneys, 3:01 a.m., Hulu. First season finale. "The Real Rooneys Disneyland Paris Special" and "The Real Rooneys Go Skiing." "Coleen takes us down memory lane, reflecting on her very first Disney visits with her parents as she and Wayne take their youngest, Cass, to the theme park." Later, "After an unforgettable year, the Rooneys escape to the snowy peaks of Val d'Isère for one last family adventure." Two episodes available.

Cooper and Fry, 3:01 a.m., Britbox. "Blind to the Bones, Part I." "After a local photographer is found dead at the popular tourist spot 'The Nine Virgins' stones, Cooper and Fry investigate."


TALKIN' 'BOUT TALK
Good Morning America/GMA3, 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., ABC. Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicks off with Drs. Alpa Patel, Susanna Greer, and Tara Narula. Later, Deals and Steals with Tory Johnson. In the afternoon, more of the same, plus Amanda Hirsch (Get Real).

Tamron Hall, times and stations vary. Kari Bravata, Kristy Garza, and Erin Lee Carr (The Swan: Behind the Mirror), plus Kristeen Washington and Domonique Dubose share their experiences as victims of the "fake 49er" scam, and Scam Goddess podcast host Laci Mosley.

The This Old House Hour, 8 p.m., PBS. Forty-eighth and twenty-fifth season premieres. "Essex County Colonial; Garden State of Mind" and "Adobe Bricks and Miter Tricks." "An 1893 Dutch Colonial Revival home that will undergo an extensive renovation to accommodate its new owners' growing family." Later, "Mark learns about adobe. Tom shares a miter trick. Jenn revisits a project."

Coven Academy, 8 p.m., Freeform. Series premiere. Three hours. "Hex Education/Blood, Sweat, and Fears/Mother of All Secrets," "Dead Ends/Power Trip," "Roses Are Red/Pick Your Poison," and "The Scrying Game/Trial by Fire." "Briar steps into a world of magic in New Orleans." Later, "A new suspect steers Briar in a dangerous direction." Next, "Briar and Jake look for answers and attend a party." Special Forces: World's Toughest Test, 9 p.m., FOX. "Duty." "The recruits work together to retrieve a supply drop while dangling from a ladder 300 feet above the jungle canopy. A grueling obstacle course through the dense jungle tests the recruits' mental and physical stamina."
