This week is Pride Fest in Milwaukee. I went to the grounds last night and it was appropriately weird. I turn 60 this year and I have been with Pride since the very beginning. I worked it more often than not. There was at least a decade that I headlined the dance stage on Saturday and sometimes Friday or Sunday. I pulled together a spoken word stage for at least two years. There were countless times that I staffed booths for numerous organizations and at least one year that we brought our tire store down to the grounds. I staffed at least four queer magazine/newspaper booths that I worked for. I'm intensely connected and yet I felt mostly disconnected. I'm amused and grateful that the fetish community and the furries are normal now. I love RuPaul but I haven't watched Drag Race in years and her queens seem to be almost all of the entertainment and this is Milwaukee and where's Trixie Mattel? But I'm just another aging gay man and every year they get younger and more different from me. Nothing wrong with that at all. I just have to remind myself every now and then that this exotic new frontier is exactly what I fought for. I didn't know how the kids would turn out but I wanted that to be there choice and not to be stuffed into boxes like we were.
