Jeopardy! recap for Wed., Oct. 9

 Here are today's contestants:

- Colleen Kelly, a girl-between-gigs from Melrose, Massachusetts;

- Robert Franke, a data analyst from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; and

- Mark Fitzpatrick, a content manager from Riverside, Connecticut. Mark is a three-day champ with winnings of $58,000.

Jeopardy!

41 // GREEN VEGGIES // WORLD GEOGRAPHY // ALLITERATION // TV COUPLING// MEDIEVAL NOTABLES

DD1 - $600 - ALLITERATION - Southern California area of canyons, passes & great views; Bob Seger rhymed them with "diamonds & frills" (Mark lost $2,400 on a true DD.)

Scores at first break: Mark $2,400, Rob $1,000, Colleen $1,000.

Scores entering DJ: Mark $5,400, Rob $2,600, Colleen $0.

Double Jeopardy!

41 // ANATOMY // "U" KNOW // PLACE THE BOOK // MISCELLANY // COLOR FILMS

DD2 - $1,200 - ANATOMY - Type 1 diabetes destroys beta cells in this organ (Mark added $3,000 to his leading score of $8,200.)

DD3 (video) - $1,200 - COLOR FILMS - (The photo showed the actors in old-timey outfits in the forest) Kristen Stewart & Chris Hemsworth had the two title roles in this 2012 fantasy (On the very next clue from DD2, Mark added $4,000 to improve to $15,200.)

Mark extended his lead on back-to-back DDs in DJ and never really had an anxious moment from there, heading into FJ at $23,600 vs. $6,200 for Rob and $5,600 for Colleen.

Final Jeopardy!

WORD ORIGINS - This word for one who cuts a trail comes from a name of a character in an 1840 novel

For the third straight game, everyone was incorrect on FJ. Mark bet $0 to win with $23,600 for a four-day total of $81,600.

Final scores: Mark $23,600, Rob $6,070, Colleen $0.

Triple Stumper of the day: The players didn't know that George H.W. Bush said he wanted a "kinder, gentler" nation, which was an absolutely inescapable phrase about 35 years ago.

Clue selection strategy: In DJ, Mark focused on jumping categories and picking from the third and fourth rows, which enabled him to quickly take down both DDs.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Hollywood Hills? DD2 - What is pancreas? DD3 - What is "Snow White and the Huntsman"? FJ - What is Pathfinder?
