Here are today's contestants:
- Erin Ward, a software developer originally from London, Ontario;
- Scott Tcheng, an ER doctor from San Francisco, California; and
- Ryan Manton, a systems administrator from Columbus, Ohio. Ryan is a two-day champ with winnings of $43,778.
Jeopardy!
ON AUSTRALIAN CURRENCY // HEALTH & MEDICINE // TV, CURRENTLY // HAVING "FUN" // PLEASE DON'T GO... // WE'RE JUST GETTING STARTED
DD1 - $1,000 - WE'RE JUST GETTING STARTED - A 1914 gathering of lawyers & police officials from 24 countries led to the creation of this organization based in Lyon (On the first clue, Ryan added $1,000.)
Scores at first break: Ryan $3,000, Scott $2,800, Erin $3,800.
Scores entering DJ: Ryan $5,800, Scott $5,800, Erin $3,600.
Double Jeopardy!
20th CENTURY PLAYWRIGHTS // ON THE BUCKET LIST // TRIPLE RHYME TIME // RELIGIOUS MATTERS // FOREIGN FILM TITLES // IT'S A THEORY
DD2 - $1,600 - IT'S A THEORY - Relating an object's worth to the hours needed to make it, the labor theory of value was a pillar of this 3-volume work by Karl Marx (Ryan dropped $5,600 from his score of $9,400 vs. $10,200 for Scott.)
DD3 - $800 - RELIGIOUS MATTERS - During the Meiji restoration of the 19th century, Japan's emperor was validated as the high priest of this religion (Ryan added $5,000 to his total of $7,400 vs. $12,200 for Scott.)
Ryan missed DD2 to fall further behind Scott, but recovered on DD3 and held a slim margin into FJ at $12,400 vs. $11,800 for Scott and $4,800 for Erin.
Final Jeopardy!
SCIENCE - Physicist John Wheeler said he coined this term as a faster way to say “completely collapsed objects”
Ryan (responding to FJ for the first time in three games) and Scott were correct, with Ryan adding $11,201 to win with $23,601 for a three-day total of $67,379.
Final scores: Ryan $23,601, Scott $23,600, Erin $800.
Tough category of the day: The players went 1-for-5 in 20th CENTURY PLAYWRIGHTS, including not knowing the author of "Broadway Bound" and two other "B.B." plays, Neil Simon.
Wagering strategy: Ryan should have just gone all-in on DD3 rather than holding back $2,400 and increasing the risk losing the lead back to Scott. Also, by going all-in on FJ, Scott forced himself to be correct to have a chance, while with a small wager, Scott could have locked out Erin and won if Ryan missed without having to be correct himself.
Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Interpol? DD2 - What is "Das Kapital"? DD3 - What is Shintoism? FJ - What is black hole?
