Jeopardy! recap for Mon., Jul. 8

 Here are today's contestants:

- Stephanie Lewis, a project coordinator from Washington, D.C.;

- Karan Menon, a data scientist originally from Edison, New Jersey; and

- Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, California. Isaac is a three-day champ with winnings of $70,186.

Jeopardy!

THE SOLAR SYSTEM // TRUCK ON TRUCKIN' SONGS // THE SPANISH ANIMAL // SAMUEL BECKETT // ENDGAME // WAITING FOR...

DD1 - $1,000 - THE SOLAR SYSTEM - Once called the largest asteroid in our solar system, it was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 (Isaac added $2,200 to his leading score of $7,400.)

Scores at first break: Isaac $9,400, Karan $1,000, Stephanie $400.

Scores entering DJ: Isaac $11,800, Karan $2,400, Stephanie $200.

Double Jeopardy!

20th CENTURY AMERICA // CAPES // 3 OF A KIND // BOOKS // VOCABULARY // FLY ME TO THE MOON

DD2 - $1,200 - BOOKS - When Kotaro Isaka's high-speed thriller "Maria Beetle" was translated into English, it got this title (Isaac added $5,000 to his score of $13,800.)

DD3 - $1,200 - CAPES - In 1602 Bartholomew Gosnold didn't just find the obvious fish at this cape, but also herring & mackerel (Isaac improved by $600 to $25,800.)

Another easy time of it for Isaac, who opened up a solid lead in the first round and just kept on going without a serious threat into FJ at $27,400 vs. $7,200 for Karan and $5,000 for Stephanie.

Final Jeopardy!

OPERA  - The melody of a traditional piece for the Koto called “Echigo-jishi” is used in Act 1 of this opera

Everyone was correct on this simple FJ clue, which seems to happen quite a bit when the FJ category sounds hard. Isaac added $3,000 to win with $30,400 for a four-day total of $100,586.

Final scores: Isaac $30,400, Karan $10,001, Stephanie $5,000.

That's before their time: No one knew the title character from the late 80s Terry Gilliam film that involved a trip to the moon (Baron Munchausen), or the first name of the actress most active in the first half of the last century from the legendary Barrymore family (Ethel).

This day in shilling: Not only did we get a guest category and host plug for a movie coming out on Friday, we got a commercial for it in the final break.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Ceres? DD2 - What is "Bullet Train"? DD3 - What is Cape Cod? FJ - What is Madama (Madame) Butterfly?
