What's On Tonight (Friday): They Picked the Wrong Damsel to Distress...

Damsel

Today is a little light on the premieres, but the lack of quantity is being made up for by the quality of the offerings.  At least, that's the hope.  Leading the way is today's Top Pick: Damsel starring Millie Bobby Brown.  Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, Intruders), the film features a stacked supporting case with Ray Winstone, Angela Basset and Robin Wright as the evil queen.

The film is about a Princess who believes she is marrying a prince only to find she is the latest in a long line of young women sacrificed to a dragon.  The lead character must find a way to survive a situation that no one ever has and put a stop to the barbarism.  I'm assuming she'll succeed just fine, but never underestimate Robin Wright.  Anyone who was married ti Sean Penn for several years is not someone to be trifled with.

TOP PICK

🎥 Damsel (Netflix, 3:01 AM) 'A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.'

Elsewhere...

*Max has the streaming premiere of Wonka.  I watched the trailer for the first time in preparation for today's WOT and I found it thoroughly charming.  That should be expected considering it was directed by Paul King, who helmed the two most charming movies in recent memory: Paddington and Paddington 2.  I'm not necessarily big on musicals, but I'll give this one a shot.

*One streamer that doesn't give a fuck about charm, outside of the kind used by witches, is Shudder, which debuts the incredibly titled Satanic Hispanics.  I'm not big on horror, especially the visceral kind, but I do like horror anthologies.  It doesn't hurt that it's currently sitting at 91% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes.  Alas, I do not have Shudder, but man do they make me wish I liked horror films.

*Roku has the directing debut of Brooklyn 99's Chelsea Peretti with First Time Director.  The film has something of a Waiting for Guffman vibe.  Peretti stars as a woman who finds herself selected to direct her local community theater production and having to deal with all the bullshit that sort of job entails.  Andy Richter and Amy Poehler show up in supporting roles, but reviews have not been kind.  Oh well, they can't all be winners.
