What's On Tonight (Friday): Run Silent, Run Deep...

The Silent Service

There's not much that interests me premiering today, so I'm going with the Amazon series, The Silent Service.  Based on a popular Japanese manga series, the series is about the captain of a nuclear submarine who declares the sub an independent state.  The captain heads for the UN to be recognized as a nation, but the United States wants to sink him for whatever reason.  It sounds more than a bit like Hunt for Red October, but I'll probably check it out given the lack of options.

TOP PICK

🔔 The Silent Service (Amazon, 12:01 AM) SEASON ONE. 'During the Cold War, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force jointly developed a nuclear submarine with the United States Navy. On its maiden voyage, the captain of the submarine, Shiro Kaieda, declares the submarine to be an independent state, "Yamato."  Based on the manga series.'✔️

Elsewhere...

*Amazon also has a new film premiering today (I'm beginning to feel like a shill) called Upgraded.  The trailer makes it seem like a cross between Working Girl and The Devil Wears Prada with Marisa Tomei in the Meryl Streep role.  Reviews so far are good (82% fresh) but the thing that piqued my interest is Archie Renaux, who was very good on the cancelled-too-soon Netflix series, Shadow and Bone (I realize that "cancelled-too-soon Netflix series" is a bit redundant).

*Hulu has the streaming premiere of a film too, though the reviews have not been as good for Cat Person (45% rotten).  I have a hard time discerning from the trailer whether this is a dark comedy, a comic thriller, or just a thriller.  It's based on a short story, so maybe just read that.

*I already finished watching Amazon's Mr. & Mrs. Smith.  I compared the concept of the series to The Americans last week, and boy was that an apt comparison.  This show is all about marriage and relationships while occasionally being a spy thriller.  The show it most reminded me of is Poker Face, in that each episode is fairly self-contained and features a different big name guest star (Ron Perlman, Sarah Paulson, Parker Posey, Paul Dano, etc.).  The leads are excellent, the show looks great (a lot of on location shooting) and the action sequences are well done.  My only complaint would be the first couple episodes dragged a bit at times, but by episode three it was on fire.  Highly recommended.
