What's On Tonight (Friday): The Greatest Highwayman Since Johnny Cash...

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin

It's not raining today folks: it's goddamn pouring.  Before we get to the rest, let's start with the (fingers crossed) best.  Today's Top Pick is the Apple+ series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turbin starring Noel Fielding.  I primarily know Fielding from The Great British Baking Show and The IT Crowd, but British audiences know him from a lot of other stuff including The Mighty Boosh.

Fielding plays Dick Turpin, who was a real highwayman whose exploits became heavily mythologized after his execution.  Turpin was actually pretty terrible at being a highwayman and a criminal in general. His gang members weren't all that smart either and were often arrested while he escaped.  This series is a mix of Monty Python (I got big Robin Hood in Time Bandits vibes from the trailer) mixed with Our Flag Means Death and I am here for it.

And yes, I know Time Bandits is not a Monty Python film, but it's Monty Python adjacent.

TOP PICK

๐Ÿ”” The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin (Apple, 12:01 AM) SERIES PREMIERE. 'In this irreverent retelling set in the 18th century, Turpin is the most famous but least likely of highway robbers, whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Together with his gang of lovable rogues, Turpin rides the highs and lows of his new endeavors, including a brush with celebrity, all whilst trying to escape the clutches of the thief-taker.'

Elsewhere...

*Amongst the runners up for Top Pick, Netflix has the new Adam Sandler flick Spaceman.  The film features Sandler in serious actor mode playing an astronaut on a deep space mission who might be losing his mind from missing his wife (Carey Mulligan) and family.  The film is directed by Johan Renck, whose main claim to fame was directing several episodes of Chernobyl.  Reviews have been a bit middling but I'm always up for some thoughtful SciFi (and Chernobyl was tight as fuck).

*In addition to Dick Turpin, Apple also has the streaming release of Ridley Scott's Napoleon.  Between this and Killers of the Flower Moon, Apple took quite a bath last year on pricey prestige films.  There's a reckoning coming for all these streaming services.  Spending $200 million on 2-3 hours worth of content, regardless of how good that content is, is NOT a sustainable business model.

*A surprising contender for Top Pick was the new French Netflix series, Furies.  A young woman becomes involved with the Parisian underworld when attempting to avenge her father's death.  She is taken under the wing of Fury, a sort of sheriff who keeps the different crime families from having an outright war.  The trailer is fun and gives off a very La Femme Nikita feeling.

*Not in the running for Top Pick today is the awful looking Peacock animated sequel, Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate.  Not surprisingly, none of the original voice cast returned for either project.  Peacock is also debuting a new series about the Dreamworks reformed supervillain, which makes sense because the film animation looks cheap even by TV standards.  I didn't watch the trailer for the series, but I'm assuming if anything it's worse.
