Hazbin Hotel

The holidays are behind us and that means we're back to a full Friday premiere docket.  Many appear to originate from foreign markets, which I'm sure has something to do with the American strikes last year.  The standout for me, and today's Top Pick, is a new Amazon animated musical series titled Hazbin Hotel.  The biggest name here is probably Stephanie Beatriz, but the rest of the voice cast is a great collection of Broadway performers including Erika Henningsen, Jeremy Jordan and Christian Borle.  I don't know if the songs will be good, but the singing will be top notch.

*The Woman in the Wall is a new suspense series on Paramount (it debuts on Showtime on Sunday).  Set and filmed in Ireland, it's about a woman who suffers from black outs and may be responsible for multiple murders.  It stars Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Affair, Mrs Wilson) and Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders, Bad Sisters).  This checks a lot of boxes for me.  I don't have Paramount at the moment as I'm waiting for the final season of Discovery to sign back up, but this will be on my list of shows to check out.

*Amazon is premiering four new series today in addition to the Top Pick.  One that stands out is the Spanish import, Zorro.  This claims to be a "bold reinterpretation" of the classic hero, but other than the addition of Native Americans, I can't tell if this will be significantly different from past takes.  Still, it's somewhat novel just to see a Zorro where everyone is speaking Spanish.

*I find myself more and more enjoying action films that are stripped down with minimal special effects and simple storylines (a big reason why I prefer the original John Wick to the sequels).  Netflix has a neat one premiering today called Sixty Minutes.  The concept is an MMA fighter has an hour to get across town or his ex will get sole custody of their daughter.  The catch: he has to bow out of a fight that a lot of people had bet money on him to win and they aren't happy.  The movie is a tight 88 minutes and reviews have been good.

*Tubi has a new film titled Guess Who.  This is not a remake of the Ashton Kutcher / Bernie Mac film, and than God for that.  Let the classics lie, I say.
