Politics Corner December 31st

photo mine (beware of Harlan)

Tonight's the night that we ordinarily exchange gifts while everyone stays up all night and very slowly gets drunk. I can't get drunk and we've lost most of the younger generations this year. The ones that are left barely drink at all. I would imagine there will be a toast at midnight and the all important sugared grapes (look it up or ask a Mexican).

I'm not sure how the fireworks will be handled this year. We'll either be in the middle of Tampico or Madero (they're twin cities) and they are fairly dense. Fireworks are necessary for New Year's. We've done it properly in the past with a straw man stuffed with fireworks. The guy who lit it ran as fast as he could away from it and good thing. Of course that was the year we were at the house of the biggest judge in the state of Chiapas and no one was going to go after her.

We might be at my sister-in-law's house and if so I hope the weather is good because it's built into the side of a bluff so each floor is small and it's a steep climb to the next level with yet another fabulous balcony. It's the kind of house that you would only buy when you are young. She and my brother-in-law are in Madero and they look across a giant valley, between them and the Gulf of Mexico are oil refineries which are always on fire. There's very little between where they are and the bottom of the hill which is not always passable. There's always some water crossing at the bottom but it can become river.

Probably not this time of year though.
