Politics Corner September 21st

If it's Thursday it must be the weekend. House Republicans got nothing done but infighting while the government will shut down in a little over a week if an agreement isn't made. This then has to pass the Senate which is not going to happen if the loonies in the House get their way. Don't blame Biden or the Dems. This is about the GOP being unable to keep their House in order. [CNBC]

Trump is also another roadblock to a budget agreement. He wants everyone and everything involved in his prosecution to be defended. This is as much an offence to democracy as those "tourists on January 6th. In private it's a very different story. Trump is terrified and asking everyone what it will be like if he's convicted.. DeSantis has been lying about Florida crime rates. Anyone with eyes can see that Florida's crime rate is not at a 50 year low, but there's been pressure from the top to make the little man look good. [NBC]

The US will offer nearly half a million work permits and temporary visas to almost half a million Venezuelans who are already here. Venezuela is a mess which is driving the migration and has also left us without the diplomatic channels necessary to deport these people and most of them are in NYC which has been placing a tremendous strain on New York's social services. Allowing them to work and take care of themselves will relieve that problem and also create hundreds of thousands of new consumers which will drive the economy. It's a win-win so expect Gov. Abbott to have a hissy fit. [Reuters]

Leave it to Rudy Giuliani to make one of the most important days in US history all about him grabbing something that doesn't belong to him. In this case it was Casey Hutchinson backstage at the rally that inspired the march to the Insurrection. [Guardian]
