The Owl House |
I'm 50! Here's what's on television for tonight, Saturday, April 8!
Our Top Pick tonight is the series finale of the Peabody Award-winning Owl House (Disney Channel & Disney XD, 9:25 p.m.). The series chronicles 14-year-old mortal Luz (Sarah-Nicole Robles) after she finds a portal to the magical world of the Boiling Isles. She befriends rebel witch Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick) and adorable demon housemate King (Alex Hirsch). With no way home, Luz enrolls in school, makes friends, and learns magic... and finds more than friendship with Amity (Mae Whitman). An LGBTQ+ Disney show?! Of course Disney cancels it prematurely. While a landmark for its queer main characters, the House's parts are better than the whole. A rough first season led to a better second, but it never found a good balance of Eda's backstory/redemption and Luz & Co. coming into conflict with ruler Belos — the latter being immensely better. Still, if you like Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, or Gravity Falls, this show is up your alley.
Elsewhere, Molly Shannon is Live from New York, Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill have a Portable Door, Houses have History, Dr. Oakley is back with critters, The CW gets Totally Weird and Funny, gospel music has a Superfest for Easter, and Murdoch goes on a honeymoon.
