We used to duck and cover, in the 80's we danced to the apocalypse. We're probably closer to nuclear war now than ever in the past. When the US dropped two bombs on Japan we were the only players in the game. There's a not so cold war in Kashmir between India and Pakistan who are both nuclear powers. India also has a contested border with China. It's all formidable Himalayan mountains so neither country has made too much of a fuss but soldiers have been shot and nuclear bombs were an option. Of course the biggest concern is Russia. When Putin warned us that he was willing to use nuclear bombs he did not mean that he would bomb Ukraine because the fallout would land in Russia. No, he'd have to drop them to the east and he's got a lot of missiles aimed at the US.
And by and large we are not worried. That's a problem.
