No joke at all this time. I still miss my friend Charlie. It's been damn twenty years. Charlie was the first (but no where near last) person that I knew who was homeless by choice. Maybe not exactly choice. It's just that who he was didn't fit anywhere else. From the outside he might have seemed crazy but if you paid him the slightest attention it was obvious that he was probably smarter than you. He was an artist and his medium was ballpoint pen on index cards. He could make you see anything. I didn't buy his work at first because I was probably about as broke as he was. His price went up and so did my budget but by then he was playing to the crowd. Still we hung out just about everyday in the coffee house. Him with his index cards and me now with my laptop and my long forgotten web magazine. He had a place along the river. He told me all about it but wouldn't show me there. He didn't want anyone to know where it was. He was correct. There are evil people out there who will prey on those of us who don't even have anything that they can take but their lives. [NBC]
