What's On Tonight (Sunday): After four decades, the Golden State Killer becomes a defendant

I'll Be Gone in the Dark

Salutations! Tonight's pick is HBO's excellent docuseries I'll Be Gone in the Dark, which reconstructs true crime author Michelle McNamara's life journey in writing her book about the Golden State Killer. The documentary has a strong balance between McNamara's personal life and her work on this unsolved case, and over the course of the series, shows how each influenced the other and/or offered life reflections. Last week's moving episode covered her death in 2016 and how her family, friends, and colleagues grappled with both her death and finishing the book she started. She had had many breakthroughs in her final months. Tonight's finale covers what happened after the book was published. The Golden State Killer (or Visalia Ransacker, East Area Rapist, Diamond Knot Killer, or Night Stalker, among others), who had terrorized various California communities in the 1970s and '80s, is arrested.

Elsewhere, I'll Be Gone in the Dark isn't the only docuseries wrapping up tonight. Showtime's Outcry also ends while The CW imports a competition show about a war at the refrigerator and the popular British Taskmaster. Plus, Netflix gets its science on, SharkFest keeps on swimming, History remembers Hiroshima, Epix brings Britannia to the TV, the Osbournes are back doing... something, and W. Kamau Bell examines inequality in public education.

I fight to protect a world that doesn't even know we exist, here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, August 2!

Mutant X πŸ“Ί (Heroes & Icons, 3 a.m.): Remember when syndicated shows were all over local stations? Well, this early 2000s syndication action show (from Marvel) about genetically-mutated people, who live in the shadows of society, fighting a bad guy and his dream of controlling them, cycles over. Like X-Men, but often really stupid. I watched the whole series. It starts off at barely mediocre and proceeds to go downhill fast. It ends on a cliffhanger.
