Politics Corner, June 6th

I normally don't do this but I'm reposting a comment that I made this morning. Not because I'm lazy but because I think it's important to examine how we reopen and why. And the rest of the country can learn what not to do by watching how badly Wisconsin is fucking it up on every level.

Here's an exhaustive (and somewhat exhausting) list of restaurants and bars in Milwaukee and their reasons for either opening as allowed this weekend or refusing to reopen. I was surprised that the vast majority are refusing to reopen. Most of the places that chose to reopen seem happy to be back in business, making profit (barely and maybe running at a loss - same overhead, fewer customers), paying their employees and getting to see their customers again, so I won't begrudge them.

But the many, many places that stayed shut (most with curbside) have a variety of reasons. Some are in the midst of renovations that were begun with the expectation there would be a longer lockdown. Quite a few said it takes more time than less than a day to restart a business that's been all but closed for months. And about half are furious with Mayor Barrett for making them pawns in a battle with the BLM protests. Some of them are getting their politics mixed up. You can't blame Mayor Barrett for the bus shut down every night now because that's the County, not the City. I know that Barrett has been getting pressure from bar and restaurant owners to reopen. But the timing is suspicious. Granted he's probably been watching what's happening outstate which got forced open by our rogue Supreme Court. But they haven't been open long enough for us to see what effect that had on the curve yet. And I can't not think that he wants to drain power from the protests. Bread and circuses. And yes, at least one strip club is reopening.

Here's the list (from another refugee site from the Mothership)
