What's On Tonight (Wednesday): Modern Family becomes history, finally

Modern Family, "Finale" (via Giphy)
Happy days one and all! And indeed it is a happy tonight with Modern Family finally signing off. It's been more than a decade since we were introduced to the Pritchetts, Dunphys, and Pritchett-Mitchells. A joy for a part of the adventure, then... not so much. Despite the early praise and then mediocrity, MoFam garnered numerous awards and carried ABC into its current comedy phase. Elsewhere, the millionaire wannabes are back, celebrities telling ghost stories is back, newscasts are done in cartoon form, fat has a purpose, the Drew Crew has an unfinished deal, wabbits get the Nature spotlight, and disabled animals get new limbs. May the Force be with you, here's what's on television for tonight, Wednesday, April 8!

⭐ Modern Family (ABC, 9 p.m.): SERIES FINALE. Oh man, 11 seasons and tonight this comedy (a debatable categorization the last several years) is finally done. Ahhhh! It's been a shell of itself for years -- three exceptional seasons + four mediocre seasons + four awful seasons -- and it has done its characters wrong on many levels. Cam and Mitchell quickly became over-the-top, the Dunphys became worse and worse to one another as fresh stories dried up, and the Pritchetts became mean. The end game has been pretty lame, too, with little of the ending that I hinted as a possibility some seasons ago. Haley is a struggling mom despite her previous go-get-it attitude, Alex is a maniac for little reason and unable to have a stable relationships, and the boys have little life direction. Yet the coronavirus won't get 'em (until you read some fanfic.) Yet the first three years contain some masterpiece episodes -- three of which I'd hold up as great achievements of the 2010s. A fantastic first season led to magnificent sophomore season and a good third season. OMG, am I feeling sentimental about this finale?! What is wrong with me?? In the final two episodes, Mitchell and Cam settle into their new normal with a baby boy. Phil and Claire decide that one of the kids needs to move out; as Gloria becomes more successful at work, she notices Jay and the kids don't seem to need her as much; the family struggles with goodbyes.✔️
