Politics Corner, April 2nd

My home state of Wisconsin is holding an election right now. The actual date of the election is Tuesday but I highly recommend that any Wisconsinites reading this who can, go to a polling place and vote absentee before then. I've already voted. I drove to the Zeidler Building (Milwaukee's second City Hall) which just happens to be my normal voting location but there was nothing normal about it.

If you choose this option it's pretty painless but not like anything you've done before. Approach from State St. along Broadway. When you get to Kilbourn Ave. you'll be directed down the hill and around into a queue where you'll wait (in your car) for someone in a mask and a reflective vest to take your photo ID. They'll come back eventually with your ID on a clipboard with a ballot, an absentee envelope and, if you're lucky, a pen. Then fill out the ballot and wait. It didn't take all that long but if you wait till Tuesday it could be chaos.

We still don't even know how the election on Tuesday will happen. We probably won't have as many places to vote. Will we be standing in lines when we're supposed to be sheltering at home? Signs point to yes and that's a huge problem.

Wisconsin traditionally has a high voter turnout and this time around there's a contested Democratic Presidential Primary (Trump is unopposed on the Republican side and no Independent Parties made the ballot). There's a State Supreme Court seat up for grabs and in Milwaukee we've got the Mayor up for re-election, the County Executive seat is open, a couple circuit court seats and a host of other positions and a couple important referendums at stake.

If we fuck this up there will be consequences. [Politico]

We knew COVID was going to happen. Worse than that? We're punishing the ones who are trying to deal with it. [Daily Beast] [NBC]

The House of Representatives has a new committee devoted to moving forward on COVID. It's charged with looking at what else needs to be done and rooting out corruption. What do you think the odds of it finding corruption are? Let's go to Jared. [CBS]
