Totally Tunes: I Speak Dance!

Everyone who knows me, even most of you here at Pop Culture, is well aware of my love for the Eurovision Song Contest. For those who don't know what that is, it's a song competition involving most European countries (plus guests like Australia) duking it out in melodies. The winner gets to host the next year's edition, and the artist/band representing it gains plenty of popularity (past winners include ABBA and Céline Dion). It's also known for being a fountain of memes.

Even with the meme-worthy people, it happens to be a very interesting competition most countries take seriously (except the UK, but nobody cares about the Brits), and it's a shame that it's widely known as something silly and unprofessional. Netflix is even making a Will Ferrell Shitty Movie out of it! So in tonight's article I'll rectify that claim by giving you a short primer of really interesting, very varied, sometimes meme-y quality Eurovision songs from the last 50 years that prove the competition is serious business.

Amar Pelos Dois (the winner of Eurovision 2017, representing Portugal):

Avanti La Vie (representing Belgium in Eurovision 1984):

Bistra Voda (representing Bosnia & Herzegovina in Eurovision 2009):

My Star (Latvia's debut in the competition, back in Eurovision 2000):

Ég Á Líf (representing Iceland in Eurovision 2013):

Eloise (representing Sweden in Eurovision 1993):

Crno I Belo (representing North Macedonia in Eurovision 2012):

Dancing Lasha Tumbai (top-class meme fountain, representing Ukraine in Eurovision 2007):

Dschinghis Khan (meme fountain precursor, representing Germany in Eurovision 1979):

After all these videos you're probably not gonna watch, I set the questions: Have you heard an Eurovision song before? What is/was your initial opinion of the competition? Holler at me if you want more Eurovision song recommendations!
