Jeopardy! recap for Thur., Feb. 6

Please welcome today's contestants:

- Cherisa, a retired I.T. specialist from New Jersey, trusts her dog Cooper to keep her away from bears;
- Patrick, a business development strategist from California, won an election by a single vote; and
- Travis, a management consultant from Pennsylvania, always loses to his son at video games. Travis entered the game as a three-day champ with winnings of $37,203.

Patrick scored on both DDs in DJ, allowing him to secure first place into FJ with $20,700 vs. $14,800 for champ Travis and $4,600 for Cherisa.

DD1, $600 - THE NEW SCHOOL - Florida International U. was planned in an old air control tower now called this type of "tower", a symbol of academic life (Travis won $2,000 from his total of $3,200.)

DD2, $2,000 - IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S ME - Only 1.17% of this new African country's population voted to stay with the old country in 2011 (Patrick won $2,500 from his score of $7,600 vs. $6,800 for Travis.)

DD3, $1,600 - FOREIGN LANGUAGE MOTTOES- The Greeks use the motto "eleftheria i thanatos", "freedom or" this (Patrick won $3,000 from his total of $11,300 vs. $12,400 for Travis.)

FJ - RANKS & TITLES - Canada, Belgium & the U.S. are among nations that bestow this artistic title that dates to the Greeks & a tree sacred to Apollo

Patrick and Cherisa were correct, with Patrick adding $11,499 to win with $32,199. Travis wagered $5,901 to finish with $8,899, while Cherisa picked up $4,100 to end at $8,700.

Wagering strategy: If Cherisa had watched the previous games this taping day, she might have noticed that from second place on FJ, Travis wagered to beat the leader's score by $1 rather than shut out third place. This gave Cherisa the chance to take second money if she had wagered just $200 more of her $4,600 rather than holding $500 back.

Movie mishaps: No one knew Oscar-winning directors Billy Wilder ("The Lost Weekend", "The Apartment") and Elia Kazan ("Gentleman's Agreement", "On the Waterfront"). All future contestants, give yourselves an edge over the competition and study this topic.

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is ivory?
DD2 - What is South(ern) Sudan?
DD3 - What is death?
FJ - What is (Poet) Laureate?
