Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jan. 28

Let's meet today's contestants:

- Greg, an acoustical consultant from Virginia, is an Eagle Scout;
- Adella, an English professor from Florida, had hyperlexia, which is a good thing; and
- Sarah, a graduate student from California, wants to visit all the California state parks, no matter how many that might be. Sarah entered the game as a one-day champ with winnings of $26,801.

Sarah opened a big lead in DJ, but late in the round she neglected to jump to the only remaining category where DD3 could be located. This allowed Greg to find it, double up and stay alive with $12,800 vs. $21,200 for Sarah and $7,800 for Adella.

DD1, $400 - SCI-POURRI - The big rock that caused mass extinction 65 million years ago has this alliterative name the "Alvarez" this (Greg won the table limit of $1,000.)

DD2, $1,200 - 2020 ANNIVERSARIES - In 2020 this composer's birth city of Bonn & surrounding areas are celebrating his 250th anniversary all year long (Sarah won $4,600 from her total of $14,600 vs. $7,800 for Adella.)

DD3, $1,600 - "A"NTONYM - Of bedridden or unable to walk (10 letters) (On the next-to-last clue on the board, Greg bet his entire $6,400 vs. $19,200 for Sarah.)

FJ - WORLD CAPITALS - Sharing its name with another ancient city on the sea, this African capital is called "bride of the Mediterranean"

Sarah and Greg were correct on FJ, with Sarah adding $4,401 to win with $25,601 for a two-day total of $52,402.

Triple Stumpers of the day: The round one "Parts of Speech" category was a flop, as the players missed three straight clues defining interjections, adverbs and prepositions.

Judging the writers: In a category about Necco candy hearts, a clue asked for a 2-word saying on a 1998 heart that referred to "now-outmoded telecommunications". They were going for "fax me", rejected "beep me" and accepted "page me".

Two points about this - faxes are still very much in use, so it's a bit of a stretch to call it "outmoded". Also, it was rather unreasonable for the writers to expect players to know exactly what old technology appeared on candy hearts in 1998.

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is asteroid?
DD2 - Who was Beethoven?
DD3 - What is ambulatory?
FJ - What is Tripoli?
