Jeopardy! recap for Thur., Jan. 16

Introducing today's contestants:

- Priscilla, a mom from New York, bench pressed 185 lbs. to "beat the boys";
- Shanu, a graduate student from Connecticut, shaved his head in his pretend sleep; and
- Veronica, a librarian from Oregon and today's winner, speaks better Italian with her hands than her words. Veronica entered the game as a three-day champ with winnings of $68,001.

Veronica was home free after Shanu missed both DDs in DJ, but Shanu pulled himself out of the hole late, entering FJ with $2,300 vs. $13,000 for Veronica. Priscilla finished out of the running at -$5,400.

DD1, $400 - WEATHER - In a 2-week period in 2018, the East Coast was walloped by 3 of these storms named for the direction from which they came (Shanu lost the table limit of $1,000.)

DD2, $1,600 - STATES' COMMON SURNAMES - Martinez is number 1 in this state where Susana Martinez was Governor from 2011 to 2019 (Shanu dropped $4,000 from his total of $5,000 vs. $9,400 for Veronica.)

DD3, $2,000 - ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA - Organized in the 1830s, this group of lawmen merged with the Texas state Highway Patrol in 1935 (Shanu lost $1,500 from his score of -$1,000 vs. $7,400 for Veronica.)

FJ - WESTERN HEMISPHERE GEOGRAPHY - It's the easternmost capital city in Central America

Only Veronica was correct on FJ, adding $8,000 to win with $21,000 for a four-day total of $89,001.

Musical miscues: The inclusion of The Who and schizophrenia in a clue in "Rock Operas" didn't lead the players to "Quadrophenia", and no one knew the films "Nowhere Boy" and "Backbeat" featured actors playing John Lennon.

No harm no foul: Everyone took an incorrect guess on a common seven-letter surname shared by two U.S. Presidents (Johnson), and strangely, two of those responses didn't have seven letters.

This day in Trebekistan: Alex wouldn't go as far as to say today's audience was "bright", but he did give them credit for being "fairly intelligent-looking".

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is nor'easter?
DD2 - What is New Mexico?
DD3 - Who are the Texas Rangers?
FJ - What is Panama City?
