🍅 Feed Me: Super Bowl Sunday Favorites

Beware the lure of the six-foot sub (Via Giphy)

Whether or not 'your team' is in the big game, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the last 'event days' around which you can plan a soirée until Memorial Day (no offense to anyone's plans for a Pesach Party or Maundy Thursday Blowout). Are you a Pepsi and Ring Dings host, or do you go out all out? Here's a sample of some my personal favorites to serve when it's my turn to do the honors.

Champagne Punch

(And by 'Champagne' I mean 'sparkling wine,' because you do not waste even mid-level Champagne on a punch. No one will notice that's not White Star.)

A signature libation is a must on my menus and there's no better staple than a punch that serves up a serious kick. It's easy to make and easy to rename depending on the teams.

Ingredients
1 pint of raspberry sherbet
2 bottles of faux Champagne (aka sparkling wine)
1 bottle of red wine
1/2 cup Chambord

Simply layer the ingredients in your punch bowl in the above order and stir. Voilà: The Frothing 49er. Salut.

As tempting as it is to begin and end with alcohol, you probably don't want everyone passed out before the National Anthem and better serve up some small bites.

Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms: Most retailers offer a pre-made option, either in service deli or the frozen section. Trader Joe's has a version that is quite good.

Spanakopita: One you can make, if you're really dedicated, or look for in the frozen section.

Mini Crab Cakes: I don't personally care for these but they are always a big hit.

Sushi Platter: Probably depends on how many guests you are expecting but the proliferation of in-store fresh sushi makes this an easy and not cost-prohibitive addition. In my experience, this is always the first platter to empty.

Crostini: Nothing easier than slicing up a couple of baguettes and layering each slice with freshly chopped garlic, Roma tomato, Gruyère, cilantro, drizzled olive oil and fresh pepper (bake for ten minutes).

Quesadillas: Simple to make or buy prepared.

Regardless of if your team wins or loses, you want the evening to end on a sweet note for everyone. A simple arrangement of petit fours suffices and spares you the messiness and storage of a cake. Alternatively, an assortment of chocolate truffles - or small individualized gift bags with an individually wrapped assortment - is a good substitute.

For a fruitier option: Mixed Berry Dump Cake.

So what does your Super Bowl Sunday menu look like?
