Jeopardy! recap for Wed., Dec. 11

Please welcome today's contestants:

- Denise, an office manager from New York, whose dad was a military nurse;
- Doug, a scientific illustrator from California, was part of a fossil-hunting team in the Serengeti; and
- Jennifer, a wine-tasting consultant from Michigan, was invited to Skywalker Ranch. Jennifer is a five-day champ with winnings of $149,500.

The game was close for a while, then Jennifer pulled away impressively in a history category while her opponents both missed a DD in DJ. This left Jennifer with another runaway at $19,400 vs. $6,600 for Denise and $4,200 for Doug.

DD1, $800 - IN FULL - "The Military College of South Carolina" is in the full name of this school (Jennifer won $1,000 from her score of $4,600.)

DD2, $1,600 - ITALIAN AUTHORS - Chapter one of this Umberto Eco novel begins as a sphere "swayed back and forth with isochronal majesty" (Denise lost $2,000 from her total of $5,800 vs. $6,200 for Jennifer.)

DD3, $2,000 - COMING OUT OF YOUR SHELL - Last name of British officer Henry, who invented a very destructive artillery shell at the beginning of the 19th century (Doug lost $6,000 from his score of $6,600 vs. $18,200 for Jennifer.)

FJ - NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARKS - Established in 2015, the Manhattan Project National Historical Park has sites in Hanford, Washington; Los Alamos, N.M. & this Tennessee city

only Jennifer was correct, adding $2,500 to win with $21,900 for a six-day total of $171,400.

Clue selection strategy: With only one untouched category remaining in DJ and one DD remaining on the board, Jennifer went to the $400 clue where the DD was very unlikely to be found. When Doug then gained control, he wisely went directly to the bottom of the category and found the DD, which gave him his best chance to get back in the game.

This day in Trebekistan: As promised, Alex followed up on why movie-lover Jennifer only bet $1,000 on yesterday's FJ about Oscar-winning movies. Jennifer said she would have bet more if she'd known the clue would be about her favorite movie ("Patton").

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is the Citadel?
DD2 - What is "Foucault's Pendulum"?
DD3 - Who was Schrapnel?
FJ - What is Oak Ridge?
