Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Dec. 24

Here are today's contestants:

- Drew, a wine technician from California, has visited 40 countries in connection with his profession;
- Barbara, a transit operations specialist from Washington state, is "the mountain goat" who gets up more easily than she gets down; and
- Robin, an editor and consultant from Michigan, has given away a lot of money. Robin is a one-day champ with winnings of $19,601.

In a very traditional top-down affair, Robin's opponents missed all of their DD opportunities, leaving her with first place going into FJ at $11,600 vs. $11,200 for Barbara and $7,700 for Drew.

DD1, $600 - METAPHORS - Arthur Conan Doyle called this city the "great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers of the empire are...drained" (Drew lost $2,500 from his score of $4,200.)

DD2, $1,600 - 1990s BESTSELLERS - The author of this 1996 "novel of politics" was listed as Anonymous (Barbara dropped $2,000 from her leading total of $10,000 to fall into a tie with Robin.)

DD3, $800 - THE SPHERE OF SCIENCE - In 1543 the world revolved around this man who wrote "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres" (Barbara lost $2,000 from her score of $9,200 vs. $11,600.)

FJ - HISTORIC AMERICAN CITIES - Damage from Hurricane Matthew in this city in 2016 revealed a plot of colonist graves from perhaps as long as 430 years ago

FJ was a Triple Stumper, so wagering strategy would be decisive here.

Robin took a very unconventional approach for a FJ leader in a three-way contest, betting just $3,801. This was enough to cover double of third place Drew's score, while barely staying ahead of Drew if Robin missed and Drew bet $0, the latter of which is exactly what happened.

This left Robin open to being passed by second-place Barbara, who bet $4,500 and would have won if correct. Perhaps Barbara missing on both of her DDs encouraged Robin to take a chance that Barbara would miss FJ, but in any case, Robin took the win with $7,799 for a two-day total of $27,400.

This day in Trebekistan: It made Alex visibly sad that no one knew the "T" city in TD Bank stands for Toronto.

Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is London?
DD2 - What is "Primary Colors"?
DD3 - Who was Copernicus?
FJ - What is St. Augustine?
