Politics Corner, November 13th

The big story today was the beginning of public impeachment hearings. Trump said he wasn't watching but he lies if he's breathing. He was watching along with the rest of us but he was more angry. We were watching here (and you can read what we thought here) and we'll be watching with a live blog again on Friday when Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testifies. Like every woman who's ever crossed paths with Trump she's got a story to tell and it ain't pretty. [Politico]

The Republicans are trying to spin the impeachment hearings as boring but that's all their fault. It was their crybabying that spurred the continuing release of transcripts from the closed testimony which left little new for the witnesses to say. Worse, the Republicans were surprisingly inept with their grandstanding. Only cover up master(bater) Jim Jordan got me riled up and that might have been just because he's a vile creature.

But there was some new stuff. Most striking was Taylor's revelation that Trump was heard asking Sondland about "the investigations" and Sondland replied that Ukraine caved. [NBC]

Kent's testimony wasn't as surprising but he laid out a stong line between Trump, Giuliani and those "investigations". [Business Insider]

After Yovanovitch on Friday more hearings are scheduled for next week including three witnesses that Republicans wanted to subpoena. Expect goal posts to be moved. [Politico]

Maybe if we tease Trump enough he will learn how to properly fire someone. He really really really wants to fire Mick Mulvaney but "they" won't let him. Who cares if firing Mulvaney would be an admission of guilt and leave Mulvaney no reason to play nice. If Trump were a big boy billionaire he'd fire him. [Daily Beast]

First Bloomberg and now Deval Patrick. When will these people realize that we're trying to shed candidates, not pick up more? [NPR]

We have allies that Trump hasn't met yet but here's Turkey's dictator at the White House for a warm Trumpian welcome to talk about how Trump rolled over and let Erdoğan have his way. Erdoğan was already threatening to cheat on Trump with Putin and nothing could make Trump madder so expect Trump to give everything away. [NPR] [NBC]

Don't believe the apologists. Bolivia just had a military coup. [The Guardian]

Venice is under water. More water than it's been under in 50 years. The mayor knows climate change is to blame. [NPR]
