Politics Corner, October 3rd

It's been three months since I took over Politics Corner. (Thanks for a couple nights off Patrick!) It may seem like we're in the same place but we're not. Last July I would not have believed that China would be both bitter enemy and closest friend. The opposition in a wrong-headed trade war with global consequences that erode our own power? Sure. Recipient of our congratulations for decades of repressive communist rule? Maybe. Trump is dumb that way. But would Trump be so dumb that, in the middle of an impeachment inquiry over whether Trump asked a foreign power to investigate a political rival for him, he would ask China - maybe our enemy depending on the exact time the question is asked - to investigate a political rival for him, intentionally, in public with press and everything? Yes, Trump is that dumb. [This story is literally everywhere but I don't read Chinese so let's give it to The Guardian]

I have no idea why there were fireworks outside my window tonight but here we are.

Apparently this will need to be restated every day from now until the heat death of the universe: the Whistleblower followed the law and so did Schiff. [CNN]

Not only is Trump openly calling on China to investigate a US citizen, he also raised Biden in a call to Xi Jinping last June. This call was hidden on the same highly secure server as the Ukraine call. [CNN]

Volker testified today and distanced himself from any resposibility for the Trump/Ghouliani crazy. [ABC]

Ghouliani seem proud that the debunked docs that he put in Pompeo's arms sparked a State Department investigation. I'm sure Pompeo is just as happy to be seen as Gouliani's fool as he is the President. [NBC]

Energy Secretary Rick Perry aims to be the last cabinet member to be replaced by Trump. We'll see if he got his timing right for once. [Politico]

A town in Mississippi had a problem with noise caused by anti-abortion protesters and counter-protest music from a women's health clinic. Against all odds the difference was split and a solution found. And it's working. [AP]

Trump wants to keep government out of medicare or something like that. [The Hill]
