- Dave, a culinary director from New Jersey, fights hunger in his community;
- Sam, a communications specialist from Minnesota, loved his toy snake; and
- Steve, a playwright from Kentucky, celebrates the "good for you" Triple Crown. Steve is a two-day champ with winnings of $54,002.
Dave had an opportunity to take first place on DD3 but instead made a modest wager, allowing Steve to hold the lead into FJ with $16,800 vs. $15,800 for Dave and $6,200 for Sam.
DD1, $800 - COLLEGE TOWNS - Ulysses would fit right in in this city at the south end of Cayuga Lake (Steve lost $1,400 on a true DD.)
DD2, $800 - AMERICAN THINKERS - Jonathan Edwards thought sin was retrained by God; otherwise the soul would be "a furnace of" these two things (Steve won $4,000 from his leading total of $7,600.)
DD3, $1,200 - GEOGRAPHIC TERMS - A Montana city nicknamed "The richest hill on Earth", or a term for an isolated hill (Dave won $2,600 from his score of $7,600 vs. $14,400 for Steve. With most of the board gone and with a little more than half of Steve's total, the best play for Dave would have been to go all-in, or if he really hated the category, to bet just $5.)
FJ - WORLD CAPITALS - In 1865 this city named for an early 19th century British hero became a British colonial capital
Steve and Sam were correct, with Steve adding $14,801 to win with $31,601 for a three-day total of $85,603.
Wagering strategy: Dave opted to let Sam back in the game on FJ and forced himself to be correct to have a chance by betting nearly everything. If he had gone for less than $3,400, he would have shut Sam out and taken the game if Steve missed regardless of if Dave got it right.
Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the college town that's home to Brigham Young University is Provo.
Correct Qs:
DD1 - What is Ithaca?
DD2 - What are fire and brimstone?
DD3 - What is a butte?
FJ - What is Wellington?
