What's On Tonight (Sunday): Turn it up, turn it on, this is Country Music

Country Music (via Giphy)
Howdy there cowfolk! Tonight we visit our country roots with the start of a new Ken Burns documentary plus some other programs sprinkled in there, too, about music, including a new lineup on AXS. For those not interested in being a cowboy's sweetheart, there's fighting with origami, a comedy roast, a townhall on college debt, and the return of professor Amy Winslow.... not to mention the usual Sunday slate full of cable offerings. So grab your tiger by the tail, here's what's on television for tonight, Sunday, September 15!

πŸ’» STREAMING

Los Tigres del Norte at Folsom Prison (Netflix, 3 a.m.): Begin National Hispanic Heritage Month right with this music special about the most popular group in Mexico, Los Tigres del Norte, performing at the Folsom Prison, 50 years after Johnny Cash.

EARLY PRIMETIME

Doctor Who πŸ“Ί (Retro TV, 7 p.m.): The scientist Mawdryn (David Collings) seeks the regenerative abilities of the Doctor (Peter Davison) to stop the mutation he and his people have suffered. The Brigadier is back! And Vislor Turlough (Mark Strickson) join companions Nyssa and Teagan, too. Back in the day, Evil Lincoln said, in a bit of spoilers for a 36-year-ago Doctor Who character:
Turlough looks way too old to be a uniform-wearing schoolboy. But of course since he turns out to actually be an alien in disguise as a schoolboy, maybe that is then good casting... but it always seemed wrong to me. I do enjoy how justifiably skeptical Tegan in particular was of him anyway.
The Big Valley πŸ“Ί (Decades, 7 p.m.): Season two begins with this noteworthy episode, "The Lost Teasure," that was frequently absent from the Western's syndication run. Buddy Hackett guest stars as a con man claiming to be Heath's (Lee Majors) father. Bruce Dern is also on the episode's guest list. ("Nick, Heath, Jerrod, there's a fire in the barn!")

FOR THE RECORD60 Minutes (CBS, 7 p.m.); Killer Motive (Oxygen, 7 p.m.); Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'n Out (VH1, 7 p.m.); Snapped (Oxygen, 6 p.m.)

Chesapeake Shores (Hallmark Channel, 8 p.m.): "Abby and Trace rescue the play. David and Jess learn to work together, but Bree works alone. Mick and Megan come together," which probably isn't sexual since this is Hallmark, not HBO.

⭐ Country Music (PBS, 8 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. This is not a drill. A new Ken Burns documentary series begins tonight! This year he tells the story of country music (hence the title). As we begin this 16-hour epic, "hillbilly music" reaches new listeners through phonographs and radio, launching the careers of country music's first big stars — the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers.

Loch Ness Monster: New Evidence (Travel Channel, 8 p.m.): Professor Neil Gemmell uses DNA science to unravel the mystery of the Loch Ness monster.

Paul Shaffer Plus One (AXS TV, 8 p.m.): SERIES PREMIERE. Inspired by his SiriusXM show, musician Paul Shaffer chats with various music legends to discuss their legacies, influences, and experiences. First up: Joe Walsh.

Undercover Cheerleader πŸŽ₯ (Lifetime, 8 p.m.): A beautiful transfer student goes under cover as a cheerleader to do an exposΓ© on the cruel culture of the squad for her school newspaper. This is the opposite kind of journalism I knew of in high school.

The Warigami (The CW, 8 p.m.): In this bizarre sounding special, the inhabitants of a poor Japanese village level the playing field against a group of bandits trying to steal a secret power the villagers have long protected. It's a Canadian co-production that was designed as a short-form series.

Young, Gifted and Broke: Our Student Loan Crisis (BET, 8 p.m.): Angela Rye hosts this town hall about the student loan crisis and will feature analysis and commentary from policymakers in the Congressional Black Caucus, experts in the education field, and student borrowers impacted by this crisis.

Pennyworth (Epix, 9 p.m.): Alfred, Dave Boy and Bazza form an unlikely alliance with the Sykes Sisters while Lord Harwood returns to take control of the Raven Society.

Power Rangers πŸŽ₯ (Syfy, 9 p.m.): In this adaptation of the terrible '90s kids show, a team of teenagers with attitude are chosen to protect the world from aliens do it by morphing into superheroes and piloting giant robots. I really enjoyed the first half. The second half goes all in on action, ruining a good story.

Spider-Man (Disney XD, 9:30 p.m.): Doc Ock intends to bring New York to its knees, but his new brain still contains memories of Uncle Ben.

Succession (HBO, 9 p.m.): A threat arises as the deal to buy the Pierce family's papers and TV stations is finalized. Tom worries about ATN's new slogan after learning some distressing news from Gregory... no Shiv tease.
