Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Sept. 20

Introducing today's contestants:

- Heather, an attorney from New York, did a rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon;
- John, a ghost writer from California, was stalked by Japanese deer; and
- Jason, a math teacher from New Mexico, lost his "buzzer zen" over the break between seasons. Jason is a 15-day champ with winnings of $418,343.


Jason struggled in the first part of DJ, but pulled it together late and was able to secure a slim runaway at $18,805 vs. $9,200 for Heather and $6,000 for John.

DD1, $600 - TRIAL OF THE CENTURY (name the century the trial took place) - Amistad mutiny trial (Jason doubled up to $6,000.)

DD2, $2,000 - THE BOOK NOOK - The first book in a series, it opens in Inverness in 1945 and begins, "It wasn't a very likely place for disappearances" (Jason lost $4,000 from his score of $10,400 but still maintained first place.)

DD3, $1,200 - STATE OF CHIEFS (name the state which the Native American chief was from) - Tecumseh, same as William Tecumseh Sherman (With only lower-value clues remaining, Jason wagered $5 of his $18,000 vs. $8,400 for Heather and was correct.)

FJ - U.S. CURRENCY - In 1929, Alexander Hamilton became the new face of the $10 bill, replacing this foe of his legacy, who got moved to another denomination

Everyone was incorrect on FJ. Jason dropped just $52 to win with $18,753 for a 16-day total of $437,096.

Clue selection strategy: It was surprising that late in the game, the players were deliberately avoiding the last untouched category State of Chiefs, even though it was extremely likely that DD3 was located there. Although they clearly didn't like the category, the trailing players needed that DD to catch up, and Jason needed it to prevent giving his opponents that chance to make a big move.

Book blunders: No one knew author of "The Power of Myth" Joseph Campbell, and in a tech category, the players didn't figure out that in 1991, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was the first fiction eBook.
