Politics Corner, August 29th

Oh, what a mess we have today. Remember yesterday when Trump was doing Saudi Arabia's bidding? Well, he's back at Putin's beck and call and the Pentagon isn't happy about it. Thought babies in cages was bad? How about deporting severely ill children? Climate change? What climate change? Don't tell the White House about no climate change.

Today in stuff that isn't Trump there's more bad news. In iffy news the DoJ couldn't hang Comey but they didn't exactly let him off either  Measles is officially back in four European countries and the US could be next. We have losers and not losers in the tariff wars (no winners to be found).

But let's start with Scotland, giving me an excuse to post pictures of another neighbor of mine: Robert Burns. The best laid plans of Boris and anyone who would listen to him have gone far beyond awry. The head of the Scottish Tories has given up on any protection for industries in Scotland, expects an election soon and expects to lose badly. She's stepping down and everyone knows she blames Boris. Remember how Russia got kicked out of the G7 for stealing the Crimea from Ukraine and messing with internal Ukraine politics? Putin still has his eye on Ukraine and rumor has it he's behind the resistance fighters/terrorists trying to overthrow the Ukrainian government or at least sow chaos. Trump has a dandy present for his boss. He wants to hold off military aid to Ukraine. Even the Pentagon knows this is wrong. [Politico]

We like to brag about how we've got the best health care system in the world. Sometimes we are even right. Because of this people with difficult to cure diseases come to the US because it's the only place where they can get the help they need. They will bring their sick children in hope that they'll be cured. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will no longer accept deferred action requests for medical care. What does this mean? It means that grandma or your child will be kicked out of the hospital and out of the country when the visa runs out. [ABC News]

If Trump had bothered to attend the G7 meeting on climate change he might learn why rolling back methane controls is a bad idea. Sure, even if he was there he wouldn't have learned anything because he won't learn. But maybe he could have listened to the oil companies that don't want the controls rolled back. [NBC News]

No, Comey is not going to prison. Yes, Comey did some wrong things for maybe the right reason but probably out of self-interest. No, Comey will not shut up or go away. [Associated Press]

Want to know why we (and all reasonable sites) ban anti-vax propaganda? Look no further than Albania, Czech Republic, Greece and the United Kingdom. All four had eradicated measles. All four now have measles. We know how measles spreads. We know measles can kill. We know how to stop measles: vaccines. We know vaccines do not cause autism. We know herd immunity only works if the herd is vaccinated. The US is next. [CNN]

Best Buy is the first large corporation to suffer large losses from tariffs that aren't even here yet but definitely will be. Who stocks their stores with goods from China but isn't hurting? Dollar stores, because that's where we can afford to shop now. [Business Insider] [CNBC]
