Politics Corner, August 28th

Some days are more dramatic than others. Sometimes it's non-stop drama. Only yesterday we were talking about Trump stealing money from FEMA and sending it to the southern border. Today we've got a hurricane bearing down on Puerto Rico and Trump is promising pardons to anyone who builds his wall. That's not enough so we've got an in depth look at the effect of sanctions on Iran (no, they are not stopping nuclear development) and a sampling of reactions to Hong Kong protests from people who are impacted. But wait there's more: there;s plenty of unease around the 2020 elections and special elections. Our countdown continues. I'm writing this early today so there's sure to be more.

Of course there's more: O'Donnell's story about Russian oligarchs co-signing at Deutsche Bank for Trump blew up. It's not necessarily not true. It just can't be proven right now. Trump being Trump there is a lawsuit filed. That lawsuit will go nowhere because to press the case would require releasing proof that Russian oligarchs did not cosign Trumps loans: they'd have to reveal the details.  Not gonna happen. In the meantime here's some background on what's going on. [Business Insider]

Hurricane Dorian has been to Puerto Rico and is on its way to the mainland. Plenty of damage has already been done. [CNN] [NBC News]

Good thing we've got FEMA to take care of that. Or we did until Trump took the funds and moved them to the southern border. Misappropriating funds was only the beginning for Trump who's been urging his underlings to break the law with promises of pardons for anyone who builds his wall. People other than Trump are claiming that it was a joke. Does Trump know that? [Law & Crime]

We've dropped out of a nuclear agreement with Iran in favor of punishing their government with sanctions rather than making sure they don't develop nuclear capabilities. Turns out that we're not hurting the upper class at all and the government is doing fine. But we're doing massive damage to the working class and the poor. You'd think we were just doing Saudi Arabia a favor here. [Los Angeles Times]

Are you still confused about Hong Kong? Why are they still protesting after more than three months? Don't they know Beijing has tanks stationed just inside mainland China? It's complicated but Vox has made it a little easier. Here's six Hong Kongers explaining their points of view. [Vox]

A new poll reestablishes Biden's lead but that's not the big news. The important thing is that no matter who wins, the losers will not trust the results. The winners might not either but holding power will console them. [USA Today]

Countdown #1: There will be two US Senate seats up for grabs now that Isakson is stepping down and Perdue is up for reelection. Abrams shot down the idea of running for the seat.  [NBC News]

Other Democrats should be thinking of running because Republicans are running scared. They are particularly concerned about the special election for the North Carolina US House seat that they failed to steal. [Politico]

Countdown #2: Gillibrand jumps ship. [The Hill]
