In Politics Corner tonight we've got some good news (I know!), some bad news and some Republican news. There are three good news stories today so I'm feeling pretty good myself.
Good News
Okay, I'm not feeling that good. All of our good news is in response to bad news. Still, it's nice to do the right thing even if it shouldn't have been necessary in the first place.
First up: the G7 meeting may be a hot mess this year but at least one good thing will come out of it. The rich members are going to help stop the Amazon Rainforest fires that were set to benefit them. [Reuters]
Arkansas, fount of white supremacist hate groups, may finally pass a hate crimes law. We're watching you Georgia, South Carolina and Wyoming. And Indiana? Do you really want to be second rate? [Associated Press]
I live in the middle of a big city so I'm surrounded by gun control supporters. Even (maybe especially) the gun owners support gun control. When my partner got a new job in the suburbs he was asked which guns - not gun, guns - he carried. The suburban assumption is that the city is such a dangerous and scary place that we all carry multiple guns all the time. The city assumption is that there are too many guns in the wrong hands and we need to stop that. That attitude is starting to spread as suburbanites worry about sending their kids to school without body armor. [NBC News]
Bad News
The same election math that might help us with gun control is hurting any chance of Medicare for all. Democratic Senators in battleground states are running from meaningful healthcare reform. [Politico]
Why is the US all mad at the French at the G7 summit? Because they want to talk about global climate change. Don't they watch Fox "News"? Global warming is a hoax! [Business Insider]
While he's in France, do you think Trump will pay attention to a proper response to Nazis? Of course he won't. [ABC News]
Instead Trump is busy piling on an already bad decision. He's such a good deal maker that he dreams of more tariffs. [Al Jazeera]
In the small category of stuff we can't blame Trump for we find that more than three months later the protests are continuing in Hong Kong. It seemed like things were calming down but police gunfire is only going to make people angrier. [Independant]
Republican News
Not-an-Eagle, yes-a-deadbeat-dad, Joe Walsh is joining William Weld in primarying Trump for the 2020 Presidential nomination. "Who cares he doesn't stand a chance" is the general reaction. Not only is he going to draw fire from Trump and away from Democrats, he's bringing up things that the Dems aren't even talking about like removing Trump from office via the 25th Amendment. [The Hill]Speaking of bad candidates: Joe Arpaio wants to
Yet another Republican has been abusing underage women. This one is not running for reelection to the Tennessee state legislature. He's not stepping down. Yet. [Mother Jones] (tip of the hat to rain)
Democrat News
If one of the candidates dropped out today they were so far down that I didn't even hear about it.
