DD2 - $1,600 - VIRUSES (THE MEDICAL KIND) - Though contained by 1906, an epidemic of this viral disease almost ended the Panama Canal project; malaria didn't help, either (On the opening clue of DJ, Elise tied Rian for first by doubling to $5,200.)

DD3 - $1,600 - OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BAYS - This big bay has 2 exits: the same-named strait into the Atlantic & the Foxe Channel into the Arctic ocean (Rian improved his leading score by $5,200 up to $12,400.)

Rian made a solid wager from the lead on DD3, and that helped him secure a runaway margin into FJ at $22,400 vs. $9,600 for Elise and $7,800 for Alex.
