This week's Notable Opening Night is Aug. 13, 1918, when Three Faces East opened at the now-demolished Cohan and Harris Theatre.

Anthony Paul Kelly's first, and longest-running, of two Broadway plays, Three Faces East was adapted three times into movies. The most famous version was in 1930, starring Constance Bennett and Erich von Stroheim. It's the story of a British spy posing as a German ally. She ends up attracting most of the men. East ran a season on Broadway, concluding its run at the Longacre.

Other notable Aug. 13 openings include:

Dulcy, which premiered at the now-demolished Frazee in 1921. Lynn Fontanne starred in this George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly comedy about a lovable housewife. IMDB: "A devoted but scatterbrained bride tries to improve her absent husband's finances by inviting two of his business prospects to dinner. Though at first thoroughly confusing the deal, she does get her husband a bigger share than he bargained for." It was Kaufman and Connelly's first collaboration, beginning a four-year collaboration.
