Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jun. 30

 Here are today's contestants:

- Mandy Moreno, a social psychologist from Brooklyn, New York;

- Richard Nguyen, a research attorney from Placentia, California; and

- Adam Remsen, an attorney and theater producer from Memphis, Tennessee. Adam is a 12-day champ with winnings of $306,415.

Jeopardy!

SPECIAL EFFECTS // ANIMAL POTPOURRI // TRIPLE "A" // ANNOTATING WALDEN // TABLE SCRAPS // THE CENSUS BUREAU SAYS

DD1 - $1,000 - TABLE SCRAPS - The Vicious Circle was another name for this celebrated group that first met for lunch in 1919 (Richard added $3,000.)

Scores at first break: Adam $5,600, Richard $2,400, Mandy $1,800.

Scores entering DJ: Adam $7,800, Richard $7,000, Mandy $1,600.

Double Jeopardy!

SPECIAL EFFECTS // DIARIES & JOURNALS // THAT ____ - ____ING CATEGORY // THE PROBLEMATIC HISTORICAL FAVES // CLIFF NOTES // WINE, WOMEN & SONG

DD2 - $1,600 - SPECIAL EFFECTS - The effect of this effect is that patients sometimes get better even when treated with inactive substances or fake procedures (Adam improved by $5,000 to $16,000 vs. $8,600 for Richard.)

DD3 - $1,600 - DIARIES & JOURNALS - His journal entry for November 5, 1922 includes his telegram to Lord Carnarvon: "At last have made wonderful discovery in valley" (Richard lost $5,000 from his score of $17,000 vs. $16,800 for Adam.)

In a very tight game, Richard had the chance to be in great shape to lead into FJ with a correct response to DD3, but he missed, so Adam had the advantage into FJ at $20,800 vs. $14,400 for Richard and $5,000 for Mandy.

Final Jeopardy!

20TH CENTURY NOVELS - David Ben-Gurion called this 1958 book "As a piece of propaganda...the greatest thing ever written about Israel"

Only Richard was correct on FJ, adding $6,401 to win with $20,801.

Final scores: Adam $12,799, Richard $20,801, Mandy $5,000.

Wagering strategy: Richard was within two-thirds of Adam's score into FJ, and Richard bet to cover a potential zero wager from Adam rather than assuming Adam would make the standard cover wager. By doing so, Richard forced himself to be correct on FJ to win, while with a small bet he would have won when Adam missed without needing to be correct himself.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is the Algonquin Round Table? DD2 - What is placebo effect? DD3 - Who was Howard Carter? FJ - What is "Exodus"?
