Jeopardy! recap for Thur., May 14

 Here are today's contestants:

- Anne Benjaminson, a foreign service officer originally from New York City;

- Nishi Kantamneni, a platform engineer originally from Pleasanton, California; and

- Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. Tristan is a six-day champ with winnings of $113,699.

Jeopardy!

EYE ON ASIA // WARNING-WORTHY WEATHER // AMBROSE BIERCE'S DEVIL'S DICTIONARY // SMALL BUSINESS // A LAST TIME FOR EVERYTHING // THE END OF THE REALITY SHOW

DD1 - $400 - A LAST TIME FOR EVERYTHING - In 1957 Mike Stepovich was sworn in as the last governor of this territory, noy yet a state; he was also the first born there (Tristan improved by $3,000 to $7,000 vs. $5,200 for Anne.)

Scores at first break: Tristan $1,000, Nishi $1,600, Anne $3,800.

Scores entering DJ: Tristan $7,000, Nishi $2,000, Anne $5,600.

Double Jeopardy!

IT'S ALL HISTORY // BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS // IN THE NICK OF TIME // TRAVEL & TOURISM // SHE DIRECTED IT // GOOD HANG

DD2 - $1,200 - IT'S ALL HISTORY - A failed attempt to convert a chieftain to Christianity led to this man's death at the Battle of Mactan in 1521 (Tristan dropped $5,000 down to $4,800 vs. $7,200 for Anne.)

DD3 - $1,200 - GOOD HANG - In the atrium of the east building of the National Gallery in Washington hangs a large & gently spinning work by this American artist (Tristan added $3,000 up to $9,000 vs. $8,800 for Anne.)

Tristan missed DD2 and dropped to second behind Anne, regained a short lead on DD3 and held first into FJ at $12,200 vs. $9,600 for Anne and $4,400 for Nishi.

Final Jeopardy!

INSPIRED BY - This 1982 No. 1 hit was inspired by "Splendor in the Grass", a classic film about the failed expectations of teens Wilma & Bud

Only Tristan was correct on FJ, adding $7,001 to win with $19,201 for a seven-day total of $132,900.

Final scores: Tristan $19,201, Nishi $1,700, Anne $0.

Clue selection strategy: In round one, three top-row clues were chosen with the DD still on the board.

Wagering strategy: From a close second in FJ and with more than double of third, with a small wager Anne could have shut out Nishi and won if Tristan missed without having to be correct herself. As it played out, the all-in bet just cost Anne the larger second-place award.

Judging the writers: They went with a useless FJ category, instead of something potentially helpful such as HITS OF THE 80s.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Alaska? DD2 - Who was Magellan? DD3 - Who was Calder? FJ - What is "Jack and Diane"?
