Jeopardy! recap for Mon., Feb. 23

Here are today's contestants as regular play resumes:

- Katie Pach, a marketing coordinator from Chicago, Illinois;

- Zach Johnson-Dunlop, a lighting technician originally from St. Charles, Illinois; and

- Trey Hart, a grant writer from Petaluma, California. Trey is a one-day champ with winnings of $24,100.

Jeopardy!

MAKES // WORDS IN 20th CENTURY HISTORY // NO STONE UNTURNED // FROM THE GREEK // JUMP THROUGH THESE HOOPS // BOSTON SPACE

DD1 - 1,000 - FROM THE GREEK - This word for a release of emotions comes from Greek for "to purge" or "to cleanse" (Katie lost $1,200.)

Scores at first break: Trey $1,800, Zach $1,600, Katie $1,600.

Scores entering DJ: Trey $1,400, Zach $2,000, Katie $600.

Double Jeopardy!

REMAKES // LINES FROM CLASSIC LIT // AIRPORTS // THE RELIGIOUS RITE // SCIENCE // TOUGH VOCAB

DD2 - 800 - THE RELIGIOUS RITE - Omiki is this, imbibed at Shinto ceremonies after it has been offered to the gods (Zach added $3,000 into a closer second with $6,600 vs. $7,800 for Trey.)

DD3 - 1,600 - AIRPORTS - Her name is on the world's busiest airport named for a woman (Katie won $1,000 on a true DD.)

Zach edged closer to Trey with a correct response to DD2 and held a narrow margin into FJ with 10,600 vs. 10,200 for Trey and 4,000 for Katie.

Final Jeopardy!

18th CENTURY AMERICA - South Carolina's 2nd-biggest cash crop in the mid-to-late 1700s was this inedible one named for a land far to the east

Everyone was incorrect on FJ, as Katie began to write the correct response but didn't complete it. Trey bet $0 to win with $10,200 for a two-day total of $34,300.

Final scores: Trey $10,200, Zach $600, Katie $0.

Sports stumbles: From a photo in his team uniform and given his initials, no one could identify NBA MVP and league championship winner Shaivonte Aician Gilgeous-Alexander.

Judging the judges: They gave Zach credit for a response, then several clues later, Ken said he should have asked him to BMS, and they took the winnings away. Let's assume for a moment that Zach's response wasn't flat-out incorrect and was worthy of a BMS. If this mistake on the show's part of not giving Zach a fair chance to give a complete correct response had made the difference in the outcome, it would have warranted bringing him back.

One more thing: It's nice that the contestants are back playing for dollars instead of points, and that the dollar signs in front of the clues and scores are now there for a reason.

Correct Qs: DD1 - Who is catharsis? DD2 - What is sake? DD3 - Who was Indira Gandhi? FJ - What is indigo?
