Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Dec. 12

 Here are today's contestants:

- Madelyn Dawson, a writer and editor from Staten Island, New York;

- Trey Hart, a grant writer from Petaluma, California; and

- Will Riley, an engineer originally from Houston, Texas. Will is four-day champ with winnings of $77,403.

Jeopardy!

CITIES BY HISTORIC EVENTS // IT'S ALL GREEK MYTHOLOGY TO ME // SEAFOOD // LET'S START A HIP-HOP GROUP // "M.C." // HYPE MAN

DD1 - $800 - SEAFOOD - This seafood stew gets its name from Provençal words for "boil" & "lower" (From the lead, Will lost just $5.)

Scores at first break: Will $3,795, Trey $3,200, Madelyn $800.

Scores entering DJ: Will $4,795, Trey $6,400, Madelyn $1,800.

Double Jeopardy!

BODIES OF WATER // NOVELS // RHYME TIME // MODERN 2-LETTER INITIALS // MOVIE LINES // BYE, PHOENICIA

DD2 - $1,600 - NOVELS - In a Dickens novel, the ownership of this title place is gambled away to Quilp (From third place, Madelyn lost $1,700.)

DD3 - $800 - BODIES OF WATER - In the 1830s sea lampreys invaded this Great Lake, though Niagara Falls kept them from further incursion for a while (Trey improved by $4,000 to $18,400 vs. $9,995 for Will.)

Trey built a runaway margin on DD3 but couldn't quite hold it into FJ, leading with $19,600 vs. $10,395 for Will and $900 for Madelyn.

Final Jeopardy!

TV HISTORY - A 1964 review of this TV special, still played today, mentions "trials as an outcast" & "the songs of Johnny Marks"

Only Trey was correct on FJ, adding $4,500 to win with $24,100.

Final scores: Will $10,395, Trey $24,100, Madelyn $150.

Clue selection strategy: Despite betting $5 on DD1, Will shopped for the DD in a new category, which is a good move to keep it away from your opponents even if you don't like the subject matter.

Wagering strategy: By betting $0 on FJ, Will gave himself no chance to win unless Trey made a huge wagering error and missed.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is bouillabaisse? DD2 - What is "The Old Curiosity Shop"? DD3 - What is Lake Ontario? FJ - What is "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"?
