Jeopardy! recap for Wed., Sept. 17

 Here are today's contestants:

- Laura Mixter, a director of impact measurement and management from Chicago, Illinois;

- Max Miller, a college counselor from Astoria, New York; and

- Paolo Pasco, a puzzle writer originally from San Diego, California. Paolo is a five-day champ with winnings of $134,516.

Jeopardy!

WORDS FOR CITY FOLK // I WROTE THAT FOR CHILDREN! // TRIPLES // EARLY ROLES // BEASTLY ENDINGS// HAWAIʻI AS IT WAS

DD1 - $400 - WORDS FOR CITY FOLK - A Weegie is a person from this city on the River Clyde (Max lost $3,800 on a true DD.)

Scores at first break: Paolo $4,800, Max $3,200, Laura $1,200.

Scores entering DJ: Paolo $6,600, Max $400, Laura $2,200.

Double Jeopardy!

OUR CRUSTY EARTH // PROFESSORS // UNUSUAL WORDS // THE 1975... // THE FALL // BANDS BIGGER IN BRITAIN

DD2 - $1,600 - UNUSUAL WORDS - The Latin for "cloud" gives us this type of machine that gives asthma patients medicine in a liquid mist (From third place, Max added the house maximum of $2,000.)

DD3 - $2,000 -  THE 1975... - ...success of Junko Tabei as the first woman to do this got her a medal from the king of Nepal (At $10,600 vs. $11,000 for Paolo, Laura added $2,000. With a chance to put a five-time champ in a big hole late in the game, the play is to shove all-in and if it doesn't work out, so be it.)

Laura had a golden opportunity to open a big lead over Paolo on DD3, but only bet $2,000, giving Paolo the chance to regain first place into FJ at $16,600 vs. $13,800 for Laura and $6,400 for Max.

Final Jeopardy!

NOVELS - In April 2025, the Empire State Building was lit up in green to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this novel's publication

Everyone was correct on FJ. Paolo added $11,001 to win with $27,601 for a six-day total of $162,117.

Final scores: Paolo $27,601, Max $7,195, Laura $14,400.

That's before their time: No one knew the main rival band to Oasis was Blur.

Clue selection strategy: While a DD is still on the board, it's not the best play to choose from a celebrity-presented shilling category, since it's highly unlikely that a DD is going to be located there.

Overvalued clue dept.: $2,000 for completing the title "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire".

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Glasgow? DD2 - What is nebulizer? DD3 - What is climb Mt. Everest? FJ - What is "The Great Gatsby"?
