What's On Tonight (Friday): It's Not Easy Being Green...

I have done a lot of theater, but I have never been a musical person.  Part of that is I've never been comfortable singing in public, but also, I generally don't much like musicals unless they are making fun of musicals (Book of Mormon for the win). Also, I had a really bad experience being in a production of Pippin back in college.  That show most definitely didn't have any magic to do, though I was excellent as a severed head.

That's why I'm as surprised as anyone that I'm making the streaming premiere of Wicked today's Top Pick.  What can I say?  I watched the trailer for the first time today and it looked pretty great.  It doesn't hurt that I recently did a Wizard of Oz rewatch and that movie totally holds up (as does the twister, which is one of my favorite old school effects).

It's not like there isn't competition, the biggest of which would be the streaming premiere of Sing Sing on Max.  Sitting at 97% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, Sing Sing is one of the best reviewed films of 2024 and received three Oscar noms for Adapted Screenplay, Best Song and Best Actor for Colman Domingo.  I somehow got it into my head that this film is a musical, but it's actually an uplifting drama based on a true story about prison inmates doing theater.  And it's on a streamer I actually have.
